One of our scoopers just sent us the latest Motion Pictures Association of America Title Registration Report. Lucasfilm, Ltd has filed for six different titles for Indiana Jones 4. The proposed titles include:

  • Indiana Jones and the City of Gods
  • Indiana Jones and the Destroyer of Worlds
  • Indiana Jones and the Fourth Corner of the Earth
  • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
  • Indiana Jones and the Lost City of Gold
  • Indiana Jones and the Quest for the Covenant

City of Gods has been long rumored to be the working title of the production. It also seems to be the best candidate of the bunch Destroyer of Worlds, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Fourth Corner of the Earth are way to corny for me. But hey, George Lucas was the same guy who named a movie Attack of the Clones and The Phantom Menace, so you never know.

It’s also worth noting that Paramount TV registered “Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Death” in 1983. I wonder what they were planning?

According to the MPAA title report, the titles listed will be clear for registrants’ use by the close of business day Aug 24, 2007 if no protests have been lodged against them. I’ve never seen a report like this before, and find the process interesting. For example: Columbia Pictures is protesting Disney’s John Carter Of Mars title on the basis of their upcoming release John Hancock. Most of the entries on the protested titles section are like this. Usually one word in the title is the same of another project. Makes me wonder if any of these people win these seemingly unfounded title protests.

Interestingly, terms like "City of Gods" or "City of the Gods" tends to refer to the Mesoamerican region: your basic Aztec or Maya concept.

Interestingly, "crystal skulls" are a real thing and a puzzle in archaeological circles. There have been anywhere from fifteen to twenty-five such skulls found in Mexico as well as Central and South America. Their origin is unknown. These are also tied, by the way, to ... you guessed ... Aztecs and Mayans.

The "Lost City of Gold" is an African idea and this reminds me of 1987's "Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold" so I hope that's a false title.

"Destroyer of Worlds" puts me in the mind of Oppenheimer's quote about the first atomic explosion and if this movie takes place in the 50's, when such testing was at its height and when thermonuclear weapons were making their appearance, that might be interesting. (I've also heard rumors about 'Area 51' being part of this and ... who knows ... alien technology? Tied in with atomic/nuclear weapons? Hmmm. Perhaps one hopes this isn't the direction they're going.)

"Quest for the Covenant" ?? I don't know. Clearly you could say something about the Ark of the Covenant here, perhaps speaking to some tie-in with "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

The "Fourth Corner of the Earth" usually ties in with Antarctica. Again, if this film takes place in the 1950s, consider that the ideas of a treaty over Antarctica were being formed in 1959 and eventually brought to fruition around 1961. So I suppose the story could concern something found in Antarctica.

Temple of Death was probably the name for Temple of Doom, before being changed. That's pretty obvious as they started filming Temple of Doom in 1983 and released it in 1984.
  • I really like the title Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It sounds really cool.

Crysal skulls would be too close to the Temple of Doom with the rocks that were stolen from the village and the skulls that were all over the sacrifice scenes.

Since most of the scenes shot so far are in Hawaii and the University setting I think Antartica is ruled out.

With Blanchet as the villian and considering her comvincing German accent.. I think we are looking at a Natzi bad guy storyline again and it will have to pull Marion Ravenwood and Abner Jr (aka IndyJr) into the storyline as well.

Interesting news. With Marion returning in the new film and rumors abounding that Shia LaBeouf's character being Indy's long lost son by her, Quest for the Covenant seems most likely to me. It might be interesting to see more on the ark and what comes of things. Destroyer and Fourth Corner don't do much for me title wise in any event. Any of the others could be interesting.

I still like Indiana Jones and the Opal of the Merman Prince. I know it was fake, but its better than those stinkers.

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but what is the purpose of filing so many names for the film. Is it, as I suspect, just so that the film crew can reserve the true title of the movie without actually giving it away?

"Kingdom of the crystal skulls" sounds the most likely.

If you ask me, it sounds like it would be City of Gods. All Indiana Jones Films have had a Religious theme, so that would go with it. Destroyer of Worlds seems to link back to the Death Star in Star Wars, so I'm guessing that might be where George got that idea from. Quest for the covenant seems too similar to Raiders of the Lost Ark for my liking, and we do have to remember - Indy is an Archaeologist - a nuclear holocaust doesn't sound a likely plot line for an IJ film - The antarctica idea sounds good, but as it seems to have been shot in Hawaii and a university (then again, Indy did work at a university, so that's not suprising), that might be unlikely. Crystal Skulls to mee sounds too corny, and again, a flashback to temple of doom. Lost City of Gold seems a little boring to be honest - what Indy searching for Gold? that sounds fairly pointless in comparison to the other films. Do remember, we have had a 4th version of another set of 20 year old films, so George needs to crank this one up to meet with the bar set by Die Hard 4, and he won't let a poor title get in the way.
