This weekend MTV broke the news that Sunshine director Danny Boyle had an idea to direct a 28 Weeks Later sequel. Today I was lucky to sit-down with Boyle to talk about his new film Sunshine and to hopefully extract some new details about 28 Months Later.
“I’ve got an idea for it. I didn’t think I would have, because I didn’t want to do the second one. I did do some second unit shooting for them one weekend, just to get myself out of the cutting room. It’s been so long doing this film [Sunshine],” said Boyle. “And I really enjoyed it, doing something trashy like Zombies killing people. That’s basically what I shot all weekend and I was like ‘WOW, this is great! You just come in and kill him! That’s what we’re going to shoot today’ [laughs]”
He wouldn’t give us any new details so we pushed slightly and were able to get this juicy tidbit: The movie will not take place in France!
“It’s to do with Russia actually. It’s to do with that part of the world. NOT FRANCE. The second film hints that it gets to France eventually, and wipes out the French. But this third idea is actually more to do with Russia, but that’s actually all I can say,” said Boyle. “I don’t know whether it will happen.”
Boyle scouted locations in Star City, Russia for the Sunshine interiors but found that the technology was too outdated. Fox Atomic has supposedly dropped all horror films from the slate, which leads me to believe that a third 28 Days Later film would probably find a home at Fox Searchlight. 28 Weeks Later is a masterpiece for the zombie genre. Truly one of the most overlooked (surprisingly by audiences, not critics) horror films of all time. That director outdid Boyle’s vision in every way. See it if you haven’t.

I Think doing a third film would be great you can’t not do a third film it would’nt look good because how the secound one finished. I think you should bring back the original characters from the first one it would make the film better because they can experience the horror all over again and there should be a cure in this one if you don’t this saga will go on forever and people will get board of it. Plus danny boyle should direct it not the guy who directed the secound i thought the first was a lot better but the secound one had more gore in which was good but not as good story line as the first one. So please danny boyle make a third film and make it the last one and make it better than the first two but don’t do a fourth one as people will be sick of it.

I thought the second was was just as good as the first. I agree with what the other people are saying.. You should try to bring the characters from 28 Days back into the spotlight to relive the horror all over again. It’s pretty obvious that survivors of such a violent epidemic wouldn’t want to live in England anymore so it would make sense that the 3 of them would want to move out of the country and in your case, Mr. Boyle, to Russia. I can see how people would get sick of these movies after a while so for the films sake, end it with this movie. I must say I was pretty pissed off when Sgt. Doyle died so please don’t sign off on any of the cool characters being killed off in this next movie unless it is totally necessary! Thanks and good luck with the 3rd movie!

hello; i think both films are great but please make this third film with a lot of gore and more scarier situations.Also i want to see more of the RAGE VIRUS, and to make it more realistic if the main character has to die then kill it.And if the story somehow continues just think about doing a possible fourth film far in the future from the third one.

hey, i am a big fan of the 28 days, weeks later movies. i do not think it is possible to NOT MAKE a third movie. all good sequels come in threes. pirates of the Caribbean. star wars, in that case it had two pairs of three, Anne of green gables, north and south, lord of the rings…. the list can go on much further. my point is that your audience needs an ending for these movies. weather all humanity dies or we conquer the rage, i feel that i want to know what happens. in every good story there must be a strong conclusion. not a cliff hanger. so the first two movies were great! but they were both cliff-hangers. give me your audience a conclusion!!!!

Yer i want a third movie and i want the cast out of 28 days and weeks to be in the third film o and i don’t want this obvious plot.
Russians go to england to see whats going on some soldiers get infected and when they come back to Russia its the rage virus all over again.
but seeing how the directer said that the rage virus gets to France after it gets to Russia thats most likely gonna happen

I am agree with the other people: bring back Selena Hannah and Jim to 28 months later, if you do that, i can be sure that the movie will be a huge succes.

Well I have some new ideas and heard a few new things. Apparently the third movie won’t end the series. I heard some place and I forget where that director Danny Boyle is planning to end the saga with a movie set in the United States. Now, the plan is still for the third movie to be in Russia as far as I’m concerned, but from what I heard on other websites, the plan is to finish the movie in the United States. Oh yeah, before I forget.. I’ve been reading what most of you were saying about bringing cast members from 28 days back to 28 weeks.. I doubt that will happen… It turns out that in 28 weeks the plan was to bring the cast back for 2nds.. Unfortunently, Jim, (played by Cillian Murphy) wasn’t having it. It’s highly unlikely to see him in anymore of these movies. But who knows, things might change.

bringing back the original director wont make a better plot line, thats the writer’s job. I dont know how a fourth would work because 28 years later is way too long.

Hell I’m so happy that they’re making a third one. I just hope they really MAKE it not just talking about it. I really hope they’ll bring back the old characters or at least have references to them. And I hope this time they won’t kill the best characters like doyle in weeks later or Mark (Selena’s pal in the beginning) in days later.
And I believe if they would make it real good they shouldn’t make a fourth cause that would be boring for most of the people

Well both movies were great, I woudnt say nothing except the idea about Russia, that suxx..If they’re planning to make the 3rd part than let the movie continue in France, what a hell Russia, and i just read a previous coment that the 4th part will be in USA, well that would have been better if the 3rd part is in France than moves to USA, this is more real..other than that everythings okay, im just gettin sick since the movies came out watchin them over n over…GREAT MOVIES THO.

i think frank should meet up with sgt.doyle in the 3rd movie.
they should make it like sgt.doyle did not actully die but was just injured very bad, and recovered and is ready to fight again.

days was better than WEEKS becuse in was a thriller type of movie the second one was a jump out at you and scare you kind of movie. and the first one has a way better story line anyways

with everyone in this forum i must say that this movies the first and second was a revelation in the world of cinema i didnt expect that the second was that good…but blow the dam of my expectations on the story and the characters was almost good as in the first one or could i say DAM better o well i just expect that the director keep up with the good work so far! and i send my best Salutes to you all…

I WOULD LOVE to see a third movie. I just bought the first and second and i love them so much. i’m really into zombie movies and 28 days later and 28 weeks later are two of the best zombie movies i’ve seen. awesome stuff.

I have a ton of ideas but its like asking a child u know, im only 16 and id love to play in one of the movies thad be great but like if u make a 28 years later ud have to end it 28 decades and centuries is pushing it actaully because the world might not even last that long and most of all people u cant beg because first its rude and second u have to think of the time this guy putsa into them u cant just say ok wheres the next movie..
To everyone that loves zombie movies if u havent seen these movies 28 days and weeks later u should because not only is it brilliant its funnominal for me :D
PS : Boyle keep up the good work and one thing if u could possibly add and i would greatly love to see is a character that comes in at the end of the movie and makes an opening for 28 years later if you are willing to which you probably already had the idea and everything too but im just asking that would be awsome.
Something like where a boy is being chased after zobies since the boy and girl are the last ones in 28 weeks later and were ending it maybe put the boy running and someone from the middle of the movie that probably disapeared came back (prefer using a marine or something if u catch my drift here right? someone come shoots them all down as the boy is just exhausted and crys into the guys chest saying thank you thank you END right there with a sunset in a big section of the street then the camera fades into the air with Jets flying by saying something about the two people on the floor and sending in a heli for evac.
IF YOU CANT ADD THIS THEN ADD SOMETHING LIKE IS I WOULD BE IMPRESSED AND HAPPY THAT YOU USED MY IDEA.

these movies rock so much. What people don’t really get however, is that these aren’t zombie movies. The Rage virus turns people into murderous killing machines, not walking undead. But, I guess that’s going a little deeper than necessary. Yeah again I’d love to see a 28 months later. Although it’ll be depressing after that, because I don’t really know what else they could do. I guess, just off the top of my head, maybe they could make a 28 seconds later, like when Celina in 28 days later said it takes like 20 seconds for the people to turn. I know that’s kind of stupid, but it came to me as i was writing this :)
Anyway yeah keep up the good work all of you people responsible for the 28 series.

i liked both the 1st and 2nd movie i think the next one should start of were the 3rd one left off and you should also bring back the people hew lived at the end of the 1st one and then if you make 28 years later the movie after 28 months later then go in any derection you want i think you should make as many of these movies as you can because i love zombie movies

i would like this one to be alot more realistic with an edgie feel to it and not to much gore just please dont over exagirate it maybe have the orignal characters in even though i dont know how they would end up in russia but iv’e always had an intrest in russian history maybe have the characters or character somehow end up in chernobyl or make it in an abandoned looking run down town or city with no military just people trying to survive and make it through life i like the teasaer that i saw on google it whent with the way i wanted the movie to possibly feel and visually look like

I thought the first movie was good. I liked the idea of the virus and faster zombies. I thought the 2nd movie completely sucked! I liked the concept of her being a carrier while not infected herself, but there were SO many holes in every other part of the story line I couldn’t suspend my disbelief at all. Those kids wouldn’t have been able to get off bas in broad daylight, he never would have made it near her unguarded, and I can’t see an Army helicopter flying around without someone telling the pilot to report in, and report back. Not to mention that snipers are picked because they show a lack of compassion! I really hope the third movie is better, because I was really disappointed in the “let’s ride on our own coat tails” movie that Weeks turned out to be.

well…………..ive read some comments and i think that having a 28 years later or decades later is just totaly bullshit………..i mean come on,wtf…….wat kinda name would dat be………….if they’re gonna make like 4 or 5 movies then at least change the title into something more realistic like ‘28 MILLION’(gay name(my little brother came up wit dat one…lol…:D))……ok.
I first watched 28 weeks later with my brother(he was scared shitless)then i watched 28 days later(really awesome movie)and i really love it when a movie has no main characters because that way anything can happen like ‘Andy’ being infected and finally going crazy from the rage virus and that soldier guy from the second movie(dude pushing the car then gets set on fire(yer……u no wat im talking bout(that guy that was supposed to meet doyle but risks his own life to get that car moving towards dat stadium place))). Anyway big fan of movie and seen 28 months later trailer on youtube(dude!!!!!!!!!!!!someguyz running away from infected and his carrying a gun but then he gets trapped by like 8 infected Zombies and then they practically rip the guy apart(its in themo vision(BLACK AND WHITE(being filmed from a helicopter or something))).

The first two were very good, so naturally, most people would like to see a third.
Personally, they should end the whole thing with 28 months later. Being more than two years after the events of “weeks”, Boyle could easily tie the survivors of the first with the survivors of the second…and still say that by the time of the third, 90% of the world has been infected.
How? Hollywood magic. They’ve written worse out on the left coast. All connected land masses should be overrun. Even transporting the infected intentionally (for study) or unintentionally (via plane or boat) to land masses that haven’t been touched, would set up outbreaks there.
My point is, that it could easily be written (and briefly described at the beginning of “months”) how the entire world became devastated…with only little pockets of humanity left. Either in hiding on infected land masses or tiny islands of uninfected.
It’s up to Boyle whether he would want to essentially destroy everyone. Or perhaps he would like to give a glimmer of hope with a vaccine, held by the survivors of the first two movies.
A nice idea might be to make it so that only a handful of people have to repopulate the world. (A personal fantasy would see me survive with all 26 Deal or No Deal models…particularly Layla).

I think they have to make a third movie, they should leave it in France. The rage got there from the underwater tunnel that connects britian and and france.

Hey guys its me again im srry i thought they were kinda like zombies but now that i saw what u wrote mouch more logical i just would love to see my idea for an ending or beginning more beginning caue it collides in with the seen of the trailer on youtube.com with the nightvision and him firing.. that would be a awsome opening seen but my scene however they use it if they do i at least want my name in the credits for a special thanks kidna thing y’know. i just want to know boyles E-mail if he uses one i would like to have a conversasion with the man cause the movie was again brilliant and a must see. Also must make another you will mkae alot money hopefully man i mean not only will america watch it you gota think of the other people in europe and russia, asia etc. i bet theres at least 1-5 million fans no no.. way more LOL >.
