Okay, so we wouldn’t normally post a commercial for a video game but this one is different. It’s a live action commercial for Halo 3 directed by Neil Blomkamp, who was announced by Peter Jackson as the director of the Halo feature film. The studios were unhappy to hand the big screen adaptation to a virtual newcomer (he’s done commercials) and the project has since fallen into development hell. This short film/advertisement also features special effects done by Peter Jackson’s WETA Digital. I went in wanting to love this. I wanted to stand up from my computer chair furious at the movie studios who obviously couldn’t see vision if it smacked them in the face. But truth is, the short is not very impressive at all. It would have been impressive if it was fan made. But I expect more from the guy who was almost given hundreds of millions of dollars to make the feature film. I want to see a Halo movie, but it has to be done right. Check out the short after the jump.

Hey Peter where is your review for Harry Potter?

i was hoping to see the spartans but i really can’t complain. Excelentness.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:42 am
Dylan - actually just working on that now (it’s late, I know I know).

Your right, Peter… that “Short Film” was lame. No sense of excitement or awe. Where’s the magic?
July 11th, 2007 at 10:52 am
I really like the first few seconds, when the ship is slowly moving in front of the sun, but the marine “lock n load” sequence was just boring, way too much like an amateur rip off of “Aliens”.

Wow, you’re right. That was dull as…dishwater I guess the phrase is. At most, the director should get a chance at a direct-to-DVD feature or something for the Sci-Fi Channel, but directing a big-budget videogame adaptation? No way, not unless Peter Jackson was the de facto director (like the Wachowskis and V for Vendetta).

I’m glad to know that you are working on the review.Everybody is saying how great it is.

Looked more like a commercial for Discovery’s “How Things Are Made.”
July 11th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
Haha Stryker that’s exactly what I thought!
July 11th, 2007 at 3:48 pm
eh. I liked it.

Doesnt look that good. On the other hand, it could have been worse. It sort of reminds me of the trailer for IMPS the Relentless. If no one has seen it, it is an amazing fan film of Star Wars “Imperial Military Personal Stories” The trailer is probably one of the most epic trailer Ive ever seen. Go check it out http://www.impstherelentless.com

Hmm…give this guy proper funding, and I think he would do MUCH better. I think YouTube has a few of his videos that he’s made that are really good. He just needs the backing and I think he’d do a fine job…that or just let Pete direct 8]
July 11th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
give this guy proper funding, he’ll probably just make more replicas
of video game paraphernalia and then have six- not just one- cork-dressed
soldier standing in the middle of nowhere. boring.
July 11th, 2007 at 7:30 pm
The guy has potential.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:01 pm
its impressive
it has a 80’s action fim vibe
i wonder what filter he used

Starship Troopers anyone? I really don’t think a Halo movie will ever be made. If it ever does it will be on the same level as Resident Evil.
Out.

I’d give it about a 4 out of 5 personally… I really like how well the CG fits in with the almost homemade look….it makes it feel much more realistic than the usual big budget, Bay/Bruckhiemer look ;)
What I’m more curious about this director, and the possible Halo movie is how well will they portray the human element….still no way to tell from this little teaser and his prior commercial work.

Seriously guys, its a two minute trailer. What were u expecting, them to show the best bits of the movie. Its just a teaser trailer. Just be grateful that something Potentially good came out the craptacular pre production of the feuture film. Seriously sometimes i think some of u guys have nothing better to do but whinge.
July 20th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
I thought it was good, considering the low budget he has to work with. The only thing I didnt like was the cheap look of the soldeirs! the halo armor did not look right on those small guys. They should have used some bigger men like footbal players or something, the armor would have looked better. I would love a HALO movie. I think it could be like transformers, if done right and wioth a huge budget.!

yea first off, its not suppose to show anything, its not supose to me a trailer for the possible movie if it was it would be called a trailer, its a short film just to show what hes capable of and to the truth it really dosent look half bad, its possible he might be keeping a dulled down effect to keep it close to the game, i trust bungie knows what there doing and if there is ever going to be a halo movie, they will make sure its done right
August 9th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
If they make Halo into a movie, and it sucks, I’ll just go ape shit. I’ve had wayyyyy too many grunt blood baths and hot, blue AI fantasies to see this movie bust.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:49 pm
i think it looked awesome. it had a black hawk down feel and it looked great.
August 30th, 2007 at 5:09 am
albsilk1, i reckon its good that the soldiers are scrawny. they look more venerable and make the “movie” more real and life like it emphasises the difference between them and the elites.
September 5th, 2007 at 9:52 am
Even though this was probably a pilot for the movie i think they should go all out CG with Halo. not disney CG but rather like final fantasy spirits within CG. ya it may be kiddy but theres somthing that real humans lack in halo. it will be hard to replicate the vibrant colours of purple and blues in a non CG movie. Oh a good example would be the new trailer for AVP 2. when isaw the ship flying through spac i thought “OMG thats halo.” Do i think Neil should direct it? no! let neil handle the CG side and peter handle the directing. this is not a movie you want to screw up on. if neil screws this up it may end his career and it may piss off a whole lot of halo fans. This isnt the time for the box office to risk hiring the wriong guy. Play it safe for this one keep Neil head of CG and peter head of directing. I pray to god they dont screw this movie up. i love Halo and i found the second halo dissappointing.

Meh. Nothing special, but it could have been a lot worse. personally, i agree with anyone who says that even though Neil is fine, someone wit more experoence should direct such a well-loved…thing with a good plot. the f/x were fine, but it looks to “held-together-with-duct-tape” instead of how I envisioned the real-life Earth of Halo: less Discovery-channel-ish.
September 22nd, 2007 at 2:41 pm
but ive gotta say, it’ll be better when he has more than 5 bucks, his friends and peter Jackson

Hello!
JUMP IN!

I love Halo but I want to know if you are making another video could you show a little more action if you know what I mean.
November 7th, 2007 at 1:57 am
Yes !!I love Halo to!Neil is a great producer for this movie!!
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:14 am
This guy could pull it off, but he obviosly just did not have much of a budget on this, and you can’t pull this off successful withoyt a budget. So in my opinion, it was a budget thing.
