Now that the movie trailer for the top secret JJ Abrams produced monster movie (tentatively titled Cloverfield) has been unleashed on the world, a big faction of the internet refuses to believe that it’s just another monster movie. Much of the speculation around the fanboy circles points to either another American Godzilla movie or a big screen live action Voltron film. Before we explore those two theories, let’s take a look at what we supposedly know so far.

  • JJ Abrams is producing
  • Long time Abrams collaborator Drew Godard (Lost, Alias, Angel, Buffy) wrote the script
  • Matt Reeves (The Pallbearer) is attached to direct
  • The whole film will be shot from the POv of consumer handheld video cameras
  • The monster or alien is being referred to as a “parasite”
  • The City is New York City
  • In the trailer they throw a going away party for a young man going to Japan
  • There is a Godzillaish roar in the background which sounds a little robotic
  • At the end it says In Theaters 1.18.2008
  • The trailer was shot before principal photography
  • As far as we know, they have not begun principal photography
  • JJ Abrams Bad Robot production company is making the film for Paramount Pictures

Some people are pushing the Voltron theory based on the idea that at around one minute and twenty seconds into the trailer, one of the kids yells “It’s a Lion!” But the truth of the matter is, he says “ahhh! It’s alive, It’s huge.” There is no “lion” spoken in the trailer.

GodzillaThe Godzilla faction has used this misquote to support a theory that the movie features Monster Zero (King Ghidorah), a Godzilla monster that looks like a lion, comes from space and shoots fire balls. One thing is for sure, it’s not Godzilla himself because “It” comes from the sky and can throw/spit/produce fireballs. And we must all remmber that a 3D Gozilla is currently also in production.

Others have speculated that the movie might be a remake of Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe. Gamera uses a fireball weapon which seems to fit the action shown in the trailer. But Gamera is virtually unknown by the American audience, so what is the point of using/buying his name property?

VoltronThe screenwriter for Voltron has said the battle takes place in Manhattan, and that the monsters have parasitic qualities which allow them to regenerate themselves by combining with metal debris. Voltron also fought parasite monsters in the series. However, the Voltron rights still belong to Mark Gordon Productions, and involves a crew of producers that are supposedly not involved in Cloverfield. Mark Gordon Productions is also not a production company under Paramount.

And then there was the emergence of the voltronblog.com website. We have done a whois lookup, and it appears that it is owned/hosted by a different company than the one that is running the official Cloverfield website (1-18-08.com).

I think the biggest fact that many people are overlooking is the release date: January 18th 2008. That’s only six months away and the film has yet to begin principal photography. Sure, that timeline is good enough for a talkie indie film but a big monster movie with lots of special effects? Something seems really off. The timing of the January release also seems off for this type of movie. Some people are speculating that the date is in fact the film’s title. And others are speculating that the date is not the film’s release date, but a release date of a trailer or more viral information.

LostSome have even speculated that this might be one giant campaign for the Abrams co-created television series LOST. It could just be a coincidence that LOST returns to network television a few weeks after the 1.18.2008 date and is expected to involve flash forwards to the “real world”. JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot is also the production company behind lost. This whole dissection of the movie trailer and online discussion also seems something much in the vein of the LOST television series.

One thing is for sure, Paramount and JJ Abrams have gotten our attention. We’ll have to wait and see how this pans out.

    *SPOILER ALERT*

Oh. And I have one additional thing. I agreed with whoever posted that statement about them not explaining Cloverfield -- like what the word meant. But I just remembered that at the beginning of the movie, it said this tape was evidence of "case designated 'CLOVERFIELD'" found in what used to be Central Park. It's what they called the whole "incident." Unless you were expecting some grander explanation. Because there probably wouldn't be one anyway. Not much goes into the naming of those kinds of things.

So I watched Cloverfield on Friday night and I think I'm going to watch it again either tonight or some time this week. I thought it was AWESOME! There was really only one time when I wanted the camera to stop shaking but it was only when he was running with it for like 30 seconds. Other than that, I thought it was perfect.

So many people keep saying that the camera work seemed "too amateurish" but *SPOILER ALERT* they already established that HUD is pretty much a moron so you'd be surprised that he could even operate the camera, much less, film things correctly. And the note before that said he should have focused more on the monster, well that's kind of ridiculous. THey put you int heir situation. HUD wasn't worried about catching the monster on tape. He was at first but after a while he realized that they just needed to survive.

The graphics were amazing, the sound was so unbelievable I couldn't even ... I mean, wow. Some dork next to me, like two seats over, at the end of the movie, was like, "That was The Blair Witch Project. I want my $14 back."

It's not The Blair Witch Project just because it's portrayed as real with a handheld camera. Some people are so narrow minded.

Anyway, you DEFINITELY have to see this IN THE THEATER! Not on DVD...

That's all I have for now.

    *****spoiler alert******

Just saw the movie.I didn't relate it at all to any Godzilla film.It did remind me of Gamera vs Legion, in the sense of the "parasites dropping off and attacking people.I did find it intense, but I have to admit, I wanted the camera to stop shaking after awhile.HUD should have spent more time in filming the monster....

Hey J.J. .. that would be me! I'm from another planet as I DID NOT KNOW about STAR TREK...

Yes since I am from Jersey and now live in KC , that does make me from another planet for sure!

Hey y'all can we say pompous and arrogant !!!

To the movie: who here caught something after the credits about "it's still alive" .. I didn't..
  • J.J. (Again)
Oops! I should have said... Maybe you'll see a trailer for "Voltron."

    ; )
  • J.J. (Again)
    Hello Everyone,

I hope you liked my movie. Well, I didn't really make it. And, didn't I tell you that no one but Abrams himself knows in the end what happens in the film and anything we discuss is just plain rumor?

I did allude to Star Trek in one of my earlier posts. Remember the DirecTV commercials? Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, Christophe Lloyd in Back to the Future, and William Shatner in Star Trek?

Those that didn't know about Star Trek must be living on another planet. It has been one of the next best talked about things along with Cloverfield. (Your opinion on "best" though).

So my question is, when did Knight Rider ever get discussed as coming back to television in a "new" form? Talk about not knowing about things!

Well, y'all come back now on Christmas Day. (Maybe you'll see a trailer for "Cloverfield 2" then?).

Alright. Calm down. That's a lot of exclamation points! Didn't mean to offend. I'm just tired of people so liberally throwing out plot twists and endings.

And just a quick rebuttal, I didn't actually hear any of the spoilers that people were saying until they started flying out on this page. I'm not a big fan of spoilers.

But all's good. No need to get in a battle like the two or three guys did on this site like four months ago. That was nasty. Later.

I can't seem to post this comment so I'm trying again for the third time... Please go to Peter's other page to read the reviews!

DO NOT READ MY REVIEW HERE THAT I POSTED LAST NIGHT after seeing the movie!

I did not put SPOLIER on it ... I didn't know.. This does not make me STUPID or what TREVOR called me... it's plain to see that I have NO EXPERIENCE in this sort of thing!!!!

This page is also Peter's ..

SO DON'T read my review here that I posted last night.. it's a duplicate from the other page..

I most certainly do not want to ruin the movie for anyone else here as I did Mr. trevor !!!!
  • SD
Trevor!!!!! How about SPOLIER!!!!! OK Dude! Screw you for the name calling... are you blind?? Have you not read all this BUT MORE??

MANY others have been writing reviews with a lot more information then I did ..... Or maybe you are not reading the other page here???

AND.. don't tell me you have not already heard all this! And I will say I'm sorry however for not adding 'Spolier" to my comment... this is the first movie I have ever followed something like this and posted an actual movie review... so I didn't know!!!!!!
  • Trevor
You know what, SD? You could've put something like .... um .... I don't know .... "SPOILER ALERT!!!!" or something. Not everyone wants to know who dies and what happens until we see the movie. I honestly don't think we all waited SEVEN MONTHS for this movie to come out just so that the day of it's release some jackhole can tell us what happened.

At least the guy above you said "big time spoilers" at th beginning...

    I'm done here.
  • SD
I left this comment on the review page but I want to leave it here too... so anyway..OK!

Ok.. I’m back.. I saw the movie at midnight CST and actually there were more people then I expected but only because it’s so freaking cold out!

The film keep my attention the entire time as well as the rest of the audience. HUD did bring laughs .. however I could not catch all of what he was saying. The SOUND EFFECTS were AWESOME! I would have to agree with many others here. It’s a must see in the theatres. It was loud and I loved it!

The movie had me on the edge of my seat so to say as I felt like I was going through this nightmare with the cast. The way it was filmed did make one feel a part of it. Yes, the camera was shaky a lot but it was still good enough to follow. There were a few times I jumped a little, you know out of my seat..LOL

The monster was exactly what I saw on one of the trailers in slow motion and freeze frame. The face I mean.. I knew it’s face was going to look just like that!

I say Bravo!!! I really liked it. But I did not have my expectations high like some others may have. Basically I knew what type of film this was and was not looking for more out of it. It is different and different is good! But it’s not for everyone..

Sure I wish there would have been more at the end.. and I wish Rob and Beth didn’t have to die.. and It would have been nice to know more about the origin of the monster.. but I guess that was not intended. So taking it as it is… I say Thumbs up! The audience loved the movie.. at the end it was quiet for a few moments and then some clapped, and only one or two boo’s..and for the most part everyone hung out waiting for something else.. but there was not.

BUT WAIT.. what was this trailer prior to the movie.. another J.J. film to be released in December 2008? A Star Trek movie? Under Construction?? What’s all that about? Is that the name of it or is it just under construction? It better not be another game for months on end like this one was.. OH NO! LOL

Oh I forgot to say.. when the movie finally started after many previews and it was quiet for a few moments… some guy farted really loud and everyone had a good laugh at that to start!

    Alright boys, big time spoilers...

    Only the black chick lives.
The movie is done VERY realistically
There's no mention of Slusho or any Japanese origins AT ALL.
There are some odd things out and some homage references but very subtle.
The monster looks NOTHING like they have speculated, is not of marine origin. It has two short back legs, two small t-rex front arms and two very long ape/lizard-like arms with claws. Face wise is FUGLY, it has small red eyes, an underbite with HUGE fangs and two globes that inflate and deflate as it breathes as if they were its lungs and also a bumpy back. Very nasty.
The crabs that fall off its body look very much like the insects from Starship Troopers.
You get absolutely NO ANSWERS of where it came from or even if it dies or what. It is speculated in the movie it might have come to his planet millions of years ago and just right now came to the surface, or that it is a prehistoric beast that layed sleeping at the bottom of the ocean, or that it is goverment experiment gone wrong, etc...but no real answer.
Jason dies in the bridge, Marlene is bitten by one of the crabs and later on bleeds and finally EXPLODES! Beth is inpalled by a large steel thingy but she survives (at least for a while) She and Rob die (??) together. Hud the guy with the camera is killed by the monster itself and that's when you get to see it clearly.

Anyways, the movie is very very very very very very good though leaves you with blueballs.
Oh and you never get to know why it's called Cloverfield either.

F-you J.J. Abrams, you tricked us again!

Anybody read japanese?

You no what would be cool, if at the end we r left with a cliff hanger where the monster escapes New York and is shown walking out into a defenceless world and the camera then says low battery and would then just cut off. It could either stop there or it could then come up on the screen (10 years later) in black and then show the camera come bak on from someone finding it and reviving it and it could show a barren landscape that the monster had rampaged through and the military had destroyed from tryin to fuck up the thing, u gotta admit it would b cool.
  • Kenny
ok i just read Trevors comment, the scene behind the sheet must be wat u r talkiing about, my mistake
  • Kenny
OK heres the lowdown, go watch the Mist movie, there is the new trailer for Cloverfield on it and the movie is called Cloverfield. Aparently its a giant monster attacking New York, now JJ Abrams has said that it is a monster of his own creation so... and you can also clearly see not parasites but actual life size demons behind a curtain eating someone so... and yes the military admits they get the shit beat out of them.
  • J.J. (again)
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! At least, hope everyone had a good one.

Can you believe it's almost 1-18-08? That will be the new New Year this year. Forget the countdown on the final seconds of December 31st. Set your timers to January 17th.

One of my friends mentioned to me that "So it IS being called Cloverfield" and I didn't quite understand what he meant. We all know it's being code-named that in its early stages, but I finally got around to looking here--after I saw it on the front page of Apple.com--and what do you know.

And the blogs are up and running again.

I wonder if that monster is really the Sandman? Remember, he didn't die in Spider-Man 3... Peter Parker let him go and forgave him. I think I even saw Spider-Man swing by in an early part of the new trailer.

    (That wasn't debris flying by!)

And the morphing lady could've been Venom. Eddie Brock changing into Venom. Or, since people say it's a lady, a new Spidey villain not seen in the comic books. A Venom or Carnage-like character that is a woman symbiote.

Did you know that the original Venom character was supposed to be a lady?

    Now to boldly go...
  • big daddy
I think that was the detective or the sargent being nabbed by the G-men. They fed him to the monster and he got infected. BOOM!
  • SD
Trevor, I saw that.. what the heck?? I think she explodes... or something.. watching that frame by frame, you can see her growing..

OK then... did she eat fish or sushi that maybe had something it in from the water this monster comes out of.. and has something growing inside of her.. like a baby monster type...LMAO... I know what you all are thinking... go ahead, laugh at me!
  • Trevor
So the part that SD is talking about, with the bio guys behind the sheet pulling the girl, I saw that in slow mo too. If you really watch it frame by frame, there's a point, which is signified by some kind of mutation-type roar, where she rapidly expands in weight. I mean, she's this little thin girl and in the course of like 30 frames, she explodes to almost three times her size. Check it out. It's crazy!
  • SD
And why in the world is the movie really being called Cloverfield??

I probably missed something relevant somewhere over the months.. But how does that name fit? Anyone know?

    Sharon
  • SD
OK I watched the trailer on paramountpictures.com and the scene Trevor is talking about is pretty clear.. if you stop that frame and move it slow, frame by frame.. you can see this "thing", down the street, between the buildings.... to me it looks like a giant reptile type. I can see half of it's head ( the other half is behind the building ) .. I see large scales, fin type looking stuff and an arm that has a webbed hand.

OK call me crazy but this is what I see when moving the trailer slow..

But what's with the medical station and 2 large people in some sort of bio uniforms, behind the sheet, pulling a girl screaming???

    Sharon
  • Trevor
Ok. Well no one else has posted so I guess I'll throw it out there. there's an official trailer out. It aired with Beowulf this weekend and you can watch it now at Apple.com/trailers. It's pretty FRICKIN AWESOME! And yes, the whole movie is shot handheld from themain characters' viewpoints. Which totally rocks! This movie is gonna rock everyone's face off...

Oh, and in the scene where the military is fighting the monster, there is one clear frame where you can see a part of whatever it is. I don't know if it's his leg or what not, but you definitely see something.

    And I'm out.

i think that the drilling company is going to drill into an area off the coast of new york awakening a giant beast or whatever. it will be a place with ample supply of the special slusho ingredient.. the thing will have been feeding on this to grow so big. the medical side of tagruato ties to the jame/teddy thing, she probably is having a reaction to the seaweed, or will be treated by the sea weed. the bold futura company builds the drill, and will probably build the weapon or defense against the beast. the tagruato company will be shown to have ignored certain warnings in order to proceed with scheduled plans for profit or for building the drill, or something like that. the slusho ingredient is the cause for everything, therefore the tagruato company will be blamed. thats what i think anyway

Here it is courtesy of: http://www.1-18-08.tv/2007/09/1-18-08----most.html

    Translation:
Everybody, thank you for viewing! I'll introduce this week's delicious recipe. Please make sure to keep this one cold!

*Skinless chicken breast - 2, cut in halves
*Soumen (a kind of japanese noodle) - 10 oz.
*Watercress - 1/2 cup cut into small strips
*Turnip - 1/2 cup, thinly sliced
*Shiitake (japanese mushrooms) - 1/2 cup
    *Chicken stock - 1/3 cup
*Sake (japanese rice wine) - 2 tbsp.
    *Sugar - 1/2 tsp.
    *Ocean-bottom crab - one

In a small saucepan, stir together 1/3 cup water, chicken stock, sake, and sugar. Chill it until it becomes cold. Grill the chicken breast on both sides for about 8 minutes, and then chill. Boil the noodles for about 3 minutes, and then run under cold water until chilled. Mix the watercress, turnips, and mushrooms into the soumen. Slice the chicken thinly and arrange on top of the soumen mix. Just before you serve, put the crab in the sauce and pour over the noodles generously.

    Go go Oishii ("delicious") Chef!

I'm not sure if it's right cause I don't speak Japanese OBVIOUSLY.
