We’ve often wondered about Danny Boyle’s Sunshine. Filming wrapped in Fall of 2005. Post production took over a year, pushing back the original October 13h 2006 release date to March 2007, and then pushed back again till September 2007 in the States. Other areas of the world have already seen it (which makes me wonder why we’ve drawn the short straw). But today I have Good News! I just received word from Fox Searchlight that the film has been pushed up for a Summer release. Sunshine will now hit theaters on July 20th 2007. And even better, it will be a WIDE release. None of this platform art-house expansion stuff. Seems like the studio has faith in the film. The film will now go head to head with New Line’s Hairspray and the Adam Sandler/Kevin James gay marriage comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. And it seems to me that all three of those films are vying for different audiences, so Sunshine might actually have a chance.

Don’t bother with this movie. Sunshine is the worst movie I’ve seen all year.
It steals classic scenes from all the great movies but they just don’t work. I
don’t want to spoil it for anyone who intends to see it, but I urge you all to
check out the forums at rottentomatoes.com to get a better idea of the movie.

Over at The CillianSite (http://cilliansite.com), we’re wondering if this wide release includes Canada. Does the press release say?

I live in London and have already seen it. It was brilliant! Seriously a stunner, visually amazing.
Very well acted with a suprisingly good turn from Chris Evans. It does NOT steal from other
classics but pays homage to them. Well worth seeing.

I’m a film intern who’s already seen Sunshine and its AMAZING!!!!!!
Sunshine is an emotional whirlpool, as the crewmembers of Icarus II succumb to their brilliant deaths one-by-one, viewers are sucked into the horrific expanses of space where aid is impossible and destruction is unavoidable. Director Danny Boyle has constructed one fantastic death after another for the eight crew members of Icarus II. As the film unfolds, viewers cease to be concerned with the characters’ survival, and become engrossed in the elaborate manners in which he or she will perish.

SEEK IT OUT
Best film I’ve seen all year. Best Science Fiction I’ve seen in 10 years. My wife and I were scratching our heads as to why it got such a limited release. We had to drive 40 miles from our home in ventura county to find a theater that was showing it. We both agreed it was worth it. One of those films not to be missed on the big screen. Also the sound was fantastic. I loved how the loud sounds from the ship added to the atmosphere. Truly intelligent, not a follow the bouncing ball flick that alot of people want in a summer movie. Still, it has action and suspense to keep your attention through-out. Highly recommended.
