Clerks filmmaker Kevin Smith has seen Grindhouse, and he loved it.
“F***king fantastic. So insanely good. Three hours long, but I’d have sat through it again, had they offered to re-run it. See it as soon as you can,” wrote Smith. “I think, after Sin City, it might be Robert’s best flick to date. Totally fun and really enjoyable. And Death Proof plays like The Sixth Film From Quentin Tarantino. Loved it. F***king loved it.”
Grindhouse hits theaters on April 6th 2007.

Wait, that’s not a review, that’s a reach around.
Sorry, someone had to say it. Doesn’t Kevin Smith have a cameo in one of the segments? I thought he did, but even if he doesn’t, you can’t expect Smith, who obviously knows Rodriguez and Tarantino personally, to trash Grindhouse. Aint.Gonna.Happen.

Smith doesn’t have a cameo, as far as I know or saw and I probably would have saw But you are right about him knowing both of the filmmakers personally. But I didn’t really post the comment based on the “F***king fantastic” comment, I posted it because I thought his comments about the two films within the movie warrented space (Robert’s second best movie under Sin City for example, which seems genuene). And his comment on Death Proof seems kinda forced. But may-be I’m reading too much into things, especially since I’ve already seen the flick.

My apologies if my comments sounded too strident. I honestly don’t trust anything Kevin Smith has to say about anything. He’s a fanboy (in the pejorative sense of that word) through and through. You’re right about QT comments (they say essentially nothing).
All that said, I am still looking forward to seeing Grindhouse next week.

I saw Grindhouse and loved half of it. While the first half moved quickly and provided so many lurid moments, the second half was as dry as a popcorn fart. I really expected more from Tarantino. If he would have expanded on one of the trailers (”Don’t” or “Machete”) it would have been better, likewise, if “Death Proof” was a trailer, it would have worked better. Still worth the price of admission for “Planet Terror.”

I realized after the flick was over that most people coming out of there were going to think that QT’s contribution to the project was going to be weak. But, looking at it it from the point of view that the purpose of the movie was to pay homage to a period in film history that was neglected by the majority, I think it acheived it better. The retro look of the characters although it was set in modern times, the focus on the other half of what Grindhouse cinema meant aside from violence (the cool slicker than the average persona on characters that wouldn’t normally interact in such a way), and the glorious ending that embodied the spirit of the true Grindhouse mentallity. Look again and see that, where one might see dryness, what lies beneath is a perfectly crafted tribute to the cinema gods.

on the whole grindhouse thing, Rodriguez stole the show, not an easy thing to do with a zombie knock off. As I woman, I was not too happy with the female lead with the leg gun gimmick, until I realized that it was really a great example of Rodriguez’s ability to create iconic images that resonate with the audience. I am old enough to remember the grind house movies, being a very old broad. It was also great the way both directors artifically aged the film, that really looked like the film stock I remember viewing from the late 60’s and 70’s, same pastel shades.
