Last week Page Six caused a scare, claiming that the Tarantino/Rodriguez’ double feature Grindhouse was headed for an NC-17 unless they made massive cuts. Well the MPAA has granted the film an R-Rating after all.
The MPAA gave Grindhouse an R-Rating for strong graphic bloody violence and gore, pervasive language, some sexuality, nudity and drug use.
It will be interesting to see how much footage had to be removed to earn the more respectable R. I guess we’ll have to wait for the inevitable unrated DVD release to find out.
Grindhouse hits theaters on April 6th 2007.

I know I’m going to sound cynical here, but my gut tells me it was all hype. We’ve heard that NC-17 line before, haven’t we? It’s good for free publicity. Days later, it turns out to be a false alarm.
That said, Grindhouse can’t come soon enough.

I personally agree with you guys that they should release an NC-17/Unrated version along with the R rated version…just on a smaller scale. This way people can choose which they want to see.

Zach, interesting idea. I don’t recall anyone doing that before (i.e., simultaneously releasing the same movie with two ratings). I wouldn’t mind having that option. Don’t know if any of the distributors or exhibitors would go for it, though.
