jakegylenlong.jpgOne of the big rumors circulating the interweb this week was that Jake Gyllenhaal is being cast as Captain Marvel in the big screen adaptation of DC Comic’s Shazam!

“I’ll be sure to let the studio, producers, and director know,” says Shazam! screenwriter John August. “But the thing is, he’s not considering. I can pretty much assure you he’s never heard of the project. And we’ve never discussed him. We’ve never seriously discussed anyone.”

August claims that casting has never come up during the “several months of meetings” leading to the project.

“Casting has come up exactly zero times. There’s no casting list. If there were a list, Gyllenhaal’s name would probably be on it, but trust me: there is no list. There’s no start date, no release date, no movie whatsoever. There’s just a script to be written. Which I should probably get back to.”

Rumor status: Officially Killed.

But what I really want to know, when is August’s directorial debut The Nines coming to a theater near me? I saw and loved it at Sundance, and am dying for another turn.

I read in ET this week that “The Nines” was picked up by Newmarket Films and it
will be released later this year.

That’s great news, Scott. Thanks for passing it along to those of who’ve heard good things about “The Nines”.

What about Jake Gyllenhaal as the next Peter Parker/Spider-Man? Wasn’t he rumored as a possible replacement for Tobey Maguire before Spider-Man 2? There was some talk about Maguire balking at the physical work (he has a bad back).

Either way, Gyllenhaal would be a solid replacement, assuming he has interest in donning the red-and-blue tights (he seems to prefer more serious roles these days).
