Justice League of America Movie Announced

JLA

Warner Bros. is aiming to make comic-book geeks around the world pee their pants. They have hired a team of writers to script a live-action feature film which will include most of DC Comics superhero line-up: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, and more.

Kiernan and Michele Mulroney have been hired to write a big screen Justice League of America movie. You might recognize their names, because they’re the hot Hollywood scribes of the month (they wrote a draft ofJLA the Kiefer Sutherland’s Mirrors which starts shooting in May).

The JLA first appeared in February 1960. The original line-up consists of  Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter. But the team has gown to also include Green Arrow, Atom, Hawkman, Black Canary, Captain Marvel, Plastic Man, Zatanna and others. The Jusice League spawned several cartoon television series, including the cult 1960-70’s Super Friends. Justice League Unlimited is currently aired on the Cartoon Network.

The comic books usually have the heroes band together to fight alien forces or groups of supervillains.

It has been previously reported that both Christian Bale (Batman Begins) and Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) have contract options to star in a Superman vs. Batman movie. I wonder if Warner’s legal team could spin that stipulation into the JLA idea. The studio is also trying to greenlight a Wonder Woman film. I assume that the lead star’s contract will include a JLA option.

Warner announced this news on the heels of the New York Comic Con (which ramps up this weekend).

And to get you excited, check out the classic Fan Film titled World’s Finest. Made by Sandy Collora, the same guy who did Batman: Dead End.

  • You know, no matter what, this is going to be a super-duper-cluster-phuk. Bryan Singer is going to want to get his mitts all over this - as well as everyone else.
  • HateSpam
If they really knew what they were doing, they'd have simply hired Collora, or the makers of Grayson, or any number of other, vasty-superior-to-Hollywood Fan Film makers. Face it, Star Trek: New Voyages is now vastly superior to both Voyager and Enterprise combined, just as Star Wars: Revelations was the apology to Episodes 1-3. Be petty about how amateurish some of the acting may be for some of the cast -which is wholely ignorant as they all ARE openly amateur. But recognize the passion and commitment to STORY that Fan Films possess, and which Hollywood schlock is missing.

p.s. this site's Java is buggy. Sorry for any typos.
  • I won't be surprised if Hollywood produces a Marvel vs DC Superheros in the future! Won't that be amazing!
  • Marvel vs. DC would be pretty cool, if done properly. But then again, the DC comics superheros' powers are almost unlimited compared to the heros of the marvel universe.
  • This better be good. I always liked the justice league. I remember watching the old series and the new one they had on cartoon network. I found out about The Question though the cartoon network show.
  • Hmm, seems like this is going to take a long time to come together. I can't see this happening before 2009, even 2010 (with multiple rewrites of the script, the usual turnover in exec. management, etc.). When it goes into production (and we find out who's directing it and who's starring in it, besides, presumably, Bale and Routh (maybe the acting lessons will pay off), I'll have a clearer feeling one way or another.

Have you caught the JLA animated version? Quite good, but Bruce Timm (Batman: TASm, Superman: TAS) was behind it, so it had to be good. If the live-action version is close to that level of quality, I'll be content.
  • I was thinking the same thing myself. I actually doubt Warner will be able to get this project off the ground at all. But you never know. Now that it's public, fanboy reaction can give it that extra push. And if they try to do it without Bale and Routh they will fail.
  • Jon
I hope they make a spiderman movie, that would be awesome
  • Nic
They need to put Kevin Smith on it. And keep spider-fetished producers the hell away from it.
  • Kevin Smith is one of my favorite writer/directors, but I'm not sure he's the proper fit for an ultimate superhero film. He's less about cinematic action and more about smart conversation (which has its place elsewhere). Although I'd love to see them put together a team or writers that would include Smith to work out ideas. And a Smith dialogue polish would be great.

But the real question is who could direct this epic comic book movie?
  • My vote goes to Joel Schumacher.

    Who's with me?

    No one???!?!?!
  • LOL, I want to say Sam Raimi or Peter Jackson, but I think the movie needs someone else. Darren Aronofsky and Quentin Tarantino would be too dark, Mark Steven Johnson would be too lame, Del Toro doesn't have a good big budget Hollywood track record... Robert Rodrigiuz possibly? Anyone have any better ideas?
  • Mike
...why don't they start smaller and simply give us a Green Lantern movie or a Flash movie.

    Hero overload.
  • saucetray
i've always wnated a movie to be about JLA. i love the comic books and the cartoons to go with it, but maybe it would be smart to start off with smaller movies and then make a Jla movie. one of my favorite things about dc heros is there background story, and a movie dedicated to all superheros at once might ruin it if you don't know whos behind the mask. theres been batman movie, and superman, but what about the flash and hawk girl. That's one of my issues with x-men. all the characters have theses well thought of stories behind them. and mybe thats why marvel does so well with their other movie like spider-man and ghost rider. it might take a while to do. but it would be worth the wait.
  • classicjoe508
i would love to see a jla movie but i agree with what has been said, this isnt like xmen you cant just throw them all in a movie without any background on them. i think it would be cool if in the next batman and superman movies they somehow refer to the jla or another hero. if you go the hero route wonder women seems like the choice since they seem to be pushing for that at warners along with jla. i'd rather see flash but that expirement has failed before, aquaman could be amazing if done the right way but they wouldnt get the right people for it, green lantern could be fun to watch with the ring, who else would dc put in there?
  • smallville
sounds cool the JL idea but is tom welling layin the role of superman and michael rossembaum lex luthor??
  • Smallville, no offense intended, but let's hope that. Welling and Rosenbaum are good, but let's leave them where they belong, on television, and not try to transfer their small screen talents to the big screen.

Either way, I highly doubt this will come off and if it does, expect Superman and/or Batman to have reduced or non-existent roles. A JLA movie would probably focus on the lesser members. It's a smart move, if you think about it, since a successful JLA movie could give Warners/DC several characters to spin off into their own movies.
  • I think a Justice League movie would be great!! If Warner Bros. even goes through with it; they were going to do World's Finest: look how that turned out! But it goes without saying that they are the perfect company for the job. Although, like has been said before, I would like to see a few more DC hero movies BEFORE the epic Justice League; Green Lantern, the Flash, Wonder Woman's already in production, Aquaman, Captain Marvel, etc. They have TONS of hero's to work with. But maybe they are doing this to introduce all them to the "comic ignorants", then make a bunch of spinoffs. Not a big deal to me, just as long as they get made. Especially Green Lantern and the Flash! They are some of my favorite heroes that haven't been seen on the big screen. Another thing, if this Justice League movie does go under way, I think they should DEFINITELY get Bruce Timm on the crew, him and Brian Singer and Chris Nolan. AND if they don't have Brandon Roth and C Christian Bale playing Bats and Supes, what's the point in doing it? Anyway, I'm really looking forward to it!! :)

    Have a great day!

    God bless,
    Moviemaker4Christ

    "SHAPE OF A WATER WALL"...
I hope the "Wonder Twins" will be in it!!
  • KEL
This movie sounds like a great idea but if it is made and Superman and Batman
are in it they should not be the same Superman and Batman from Superman
Returns and Batman Begins, character wise. Superman should be more like the
John Byrne comix version(not the whiny Christopher Reeve version) and Batman should be more like the version seen on
Batman:the animated series. This will give Warner Bros. a chance to not screw up
Batman's costume and make it how it is in the comix for once. For those of you
not familiar with the comix Bats wear's a black cape, cowl, gloves, letard, and boots
along with a gray shirt and pants with a yellow or gold utility belt and occasianally
sports a yellowish elipse that matches his belt color around the black bat symbol on his chest, that's how it should look in movies,I'm tired of comprising. The only thing they should use from any previous version of Superman or Batman is Danny Elfman or Shirley Walker's Batman theme and John Williams Superman theme for whenever a scene needs it.Also,I
don't want Warners screw'n with Flash,Martian Manhunter and GL's suits much either. This JLA should feature Superman,Batman,Wonder Woman,Flash(Barry Allen's my 1st choice and Wally West is my second),Green Lantern(Hal Jordan's my first choice and John Stewart is my second)and the Martian Manhunter.
Hawkgirl,Aquaman and other crappy characters can appear in sequels.
Superman and Batman should have already met and learned each others secret
identities and become good friends long before the time of the movie. Superman and Batman should also know Wonder Woman a little. The only problem is coming up with who forms the League;Superman,Batman, and Wonder Woman,or Green Lantern,Flash and Wonder Woman. The Joker,Lex Luthor(the John Byrne version)Sinestro,Mirror Master,Killer Frost, and the Parasite should team up to take down the newly formed League and complete some certain tasks
for their employer, the real threat,DARKSEID!!!!! Each heroes origin should be explored briefly during the open credits while the score is playing(John Williams,John Ottman,Danny Elfman, anyone?). And PLEASE get someone new to direct it,someone good with a lot of potential, don't recycle Bryan Singer or Christopher Nolan again. That's how it oughta be done.
  • Mark
OH for the luvva MIKE!!! Brandon Routh as Superman? OK he looks like christopher reeves but can they NOT find any one out of the gazillion actors in Hollywood that actually LOOK like Superman??!!! Superman is a HUGE guy BIG HUGE BIG did I say Huge?? Oi Vey!
  • Mark
OH ,and I agree with Kel , Dont mess with the costumes. Batmans costume should look like it does in the comics (without the yellow oval , sorry Kel) It has worked well in a lot of fan made films so why not in a big budget studio film. And although I am a Hal Jordan fan I think the GL in this film should be John Stewart
  • Will
I agree with Mark, John Stewart is a much better Green Lantern, I would have
Wally West or Bart Allen as the Flash. There should also be a Legion of Doom in
    the movie with the Joker
  • Ben
Sorry to you guys who are hardcore in the aspect of keeping the heroes looking EXACTLY like they do in the comic books. Welcome to Hollywood. Costumes are going to be a bit more 'glamorous' and larger-than-life. I honestly have no problem with Bale's Bat-suit. Especially since they did a great job explaining why it looks like it does. Though the comic costumes work on paper, and in fan films, Hollywood always makes things much bigger and stylish. Get used to it. I never understood why Batman used to wear blue and light gray. Hiding in the shadows? Yeah, right! More like sticking out like a sore thumb! And as for the current comic look, well, he's got the black, which makes sense, but he's still got that gray. It draws attention to his chest, and if I was a villain going after Bats, I'd shoot him right there. With Black, he hides in the shadows better, and you'd never know where to aim to shoot him.
I look at Nightwing, Batwoman, and the current Batgirl, and they all look sleek and modern. The only problem with those characters is the fact that their emblems are bright and stick out. Not a good thing for heroes of the shadows.

I for one am thrilled that Watrner Bros is looking to get this going. It's about time! I know it'll probably take years to really get it off the ground, but if they take their time, this could be one of the biggest and greatest comic book movies ever made.

    It's about time Warners!
  • Edwin
I would love to see this movie. I'm a big fan.

Superman Returns is quite boring for me. Maybe because they're trying to twist stories that was seen (although repackaged) a long long time ago. If I were Warner Bros, I'll produce a Superman movie wherein he'll die. His fight with Doomsday will be one for all of us Justice League buffs. His return will be a sure blockbuster sequel.
  • docx951
I would like to see them adapt the Mark Waid/Alex Ross graphic novel KINGDOM COME, and folks, let's just get a new cast for this film...no borrowing from other comic book films. I'd like to see Antoine Fuqua or Kathyrn Bigelow direct it.
  • cinch
There is already a trailer out on youtube - hosehead from S.R. and I think Christian Bale as Batman. And imbd only has a fucking title and date on this!

Even more, there's an aquaman trailer - looks like the movie is done - and imdb doesn't have shit on it!
  • cinch
Oh, and green lantern, too. No-thing at imdb!
  • frank wallace
i would just like to now why the jla movie video i watched starred teenagers. like the kid from smallville and lez from smallville. im not up to date on actors names, but i dont really care. i just wanna know why the video has kids in it?
  • frank wallace
    lex* from smallville lol
  • Sounds good.Another Marvel superhero movie.
  • neschelle debuque
Let the Wachowski brothers direct the JLA film or D.C vs. MARVEL... or a joint direction of Michael Bay and Brett Ratner!
  • neschelle debuque

  • Aidan
Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea? Sure, bringing a whole lot of superheroes into the one movie will create quite a spectacle, but what about the individual characters? It's OK for a comic book or a cartoon, but a film? And if they do decide to make it, I hope both Christian Bale and Brandon Routh stay the hell away from it. Batman Begins was brilliant, and most people love the Superman movies - crossing them over will cheapen them both. They're entirely different entities. Let's leave it at that.
  • Luke
this is a really bad idea for right now, obviously, the new batmana nd superman franchises are way too young for this kind of team-up. and let's not forget the horror of the last superhero team up 'Batman and Robin'. It doesn't work, and it is even less likely to work if people aren't attached to the heroes, superman/batman need to do their own thing for a while, Singer agrees and he's no idiot.
  • V
I think there's an explanation for the bright logos on the chest. I remember reading the Punisher had the skull on his chest to lure people from shooting at his head (into presumably his bullet-proof vest). It does some makes sense to have the bright symbol on the chest if you buy that.
  • Tom
I just have to say, and I hope DC and Warner Bros. are reading this, HAL JORDAN IS GREEN LANTERN. I don't care how PC you have to be, get it right. John Stewart is a sub-standard ring slinger.
  • 9470
Hal Jordan would only be Green Lantern if it was a 'Superfriends' movie. if it's a 'Justice League' [or justice league unlimited, however unlikely] movie, it has to be John Stewart. oh, and stop ragging on John. just because you're not a fan of his being a GL doesn't mean he sucks or that anyone is being PC.

besides, if they do make a GL movie, it would be hal all the way. why not let john have the spotlight in the JL movie?
  • david johnson
I think the "Justice League" movie is a very bad idea OR AT LEAST PREMATURE. As usual Warner Bros. is going to eff-up another great title DC has to offer(It's not bad enough that Superman has a kid, the colors on his uniform are tarnished (though I do love the new interpretation of the "S" shield and that's too small, The Fortress of Solitude still has no life, not only is he a "deadbeat dad", "I'm always around", Come on!? But they turned him sissy with the most un-Superman phrase ever uttered from the character's mouth "I'm still Superman" in the midst of getting beatdown. With lines like that I'd beat the Hell out of him too.) I think they (Warner Bros.) needs to let DC have more creative control over their characters. Which is obvious they don't or the Joel Schumacher "Batman and Robin with nipples and a thong" movies would never've happened. My plan is simple: for them to milk as much money out of the franchise books DC has to offer, here's what they have to do: Make movies with the big name heroes in either missions or at least passing glances, conversations that feature cameo appearances to familiarize people with them and then do the Superman/Batman movies. Also they could create movie tie-ins like comic books where you would have a continuing storyline that involves the next franchise to such a degree that you would have no choice but to see the next movie to follow the story. It worked for the "Matrix" movies or "The Lord of the Rings" movies. With that out out the way more hero
movies "Wonder Woman"( I would've loved Joss Whedon's version), or (David S. Goyer's)"The Flash" etc. and add more cameos then when they're all out of the way, use the "Justice League" movie to bring it to a head then finally finish off with "Kingdom Come" By then there should be enough cameo work to develop the "JSA", "Young Justice", "Nightwing" ETC. They could also develop television properties based from the movies. Maybe with cameos from some of the movie's stars (lesser or otherwise) to lend validity and continuity to the T.V shows. I think that would guarantee everyone work and money for a long time. Of course it would require a long term commitment but a huge pay-off for all involved. Brilliant, I know. GEEKS UNITE. HELP ME TO BRING LIFE TO MY VISION AND MAKE IT SO!!
  • Cody
I think Tom Welling should take the role as superman, for many reason!!!!!
  • Crow
Tom without a doubt should be Superman!!!
  • Crow
Smallville fans want to see Welling as Superman, he would be better for the role!!!
  • Cody
The reason for Tom taking the role as superman is that not only did Reeve pass the torch to him but he's been warmed up to the role. He's the same age as chris Reeve was when he played superman back in the day and Tom as Superman would have so much more meaning to it! Don't get me wrong Brandon was good but Tom Welling as Superman looks better and makes more sense.
  • J Curtis
I agree with David. If Warner wants to make the money, then they shouldn't do a JLA movie yet. They should make individual films first, especially Flash and Green Lantern. Then, once people know those stories as well, work up to doing a JLA movie. For continuity, I think Roth and Bale. I would have loved to see Tom in the role of Superman, but the movie industry couldn't wait for him to finish up Smallville. Roth has the backing and they will use him, and everyone knows it. Kevin as Lex was good, and he liked the role so I bet he'd go along with it. It's the script that would worry all the GEEKS. The characters are so well done in the comics and the story arcs that its hard to have stupid, no comic reading, retarded "I think Robin looks good with his nipples" writers and directors mess with things. But they've learned by now, we'll all see it anyway just to see how bad. LOL
  • Trinity
    Superman + T Welling = YES
    Batman + Bale = YES
Lex + Rosenbaum or Spacey = YES
Wonder woman + Connelly = YES
I say YES -YES -YES to these ideas!!!

I love Ben Stiller, but if he does indeed play Batman, I won't watch it at the theaters...
  • KEL
This will suck if they don'y use Hal and Barry.
  • Jay
For the Love of DC if this movie gets made please, please don't crap it up! You don't need big names to fill the tight's of legends, and make sure you don't replace Brandon Routh as Superman! I see Bruce Timm's name up there for writing, consider it please! The world of DC writer's are more then able to fire off an amazing script! Also on a side note for anything related to Batman, Nathan Jones former WWE and Troy star waould make a killer Bane! God speed Hollywood, our nerdy hopes and dreams lay in you hands.....don't F it up :-)
  • Drew
The Justice League movie should be a one time EPIC event. They should be portrayed by legitimate actors. Not 20 something TV stars. They should also be actors in their 30's, maybe even 40's. Mature and confident. Like most of the main cast of X-men and IronMan.
    Here is my proposed list:

    Batman..................Josh Brolin
    Superman...............Gerard Butler
    Wonder Woman.......Lucy Lawless
    Green Lantern..........David Hasslehoff
    Green Arrow.............Tyler Mayne
    Hawk Girl................Charlize Theron
    Aquaman................Mark-Paul Gosselar
    Flash......................Rhys Ifans
    Martian Manhunter...Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

    The Joker...............Christian Slater
    Brainiac..................Samuel L. Jackson
    Gorilla Grodd...........Michael Clark Duncan
    Sinestro..................Steve Buschemi
