Everyone got in a good laugh about Cats during the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony Sunday night, but the Visual Effects Society had their claws out. The organization representing visual effects artists released a stern statement condemning the Oscars Cats segment, in which stars James Corden and Rebel Wilson poked fun at the Tom Hooper-directed big-budget catastrophe by dressing up as their characters from the film.

“As cast members of the motion picture Cats, nobody more than us understands the importance of good visual effects,” the stars said. Apparently not, according to VES.

2020 Visual Effects Society Awards nominees

Hollywood should be labeled a danger zone this time of year: so many award nominations are flying around that if you’re walking down Sunset Boulevard and not keeping your head on a swivel, you’re liable to get clocked by one of them. There have been several nominees for various guild awards announced today alone, including the contenders for the Visual Effects Society‘s annual awards show, which “recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation worldwide in film, animation, television, commercials and video games, and the VFX supervisors, VFX producers and artists who bring this work to life.”

The Mandalorian and Game of Thrones are sitting at the top of the pile, tied with six nominations each. But Toy Story 4 and Alita: Battle Angel are nipping at their heels with five nominees each. Get the full list below.

2018 Visual Effects Society Awards

Say what you will about 2017, but last year’s crop of movies was pretty damn good overall, and that high bar of quality is reflected in the nominees for the 16th annual VES Awards. Nearly 3,400 artists, producers, technologists, and entertainment industry workers narrowed down the movies that best represented outstanding achievements in visual effects, and Blade Runner 2049 and War for the Planet of the Apes ended up tying for the highest number of feature film nominations. Meanwhile, HBO’s Game of Thrones leads the pack in terms of television programs, and the fantasy series earned the most overall nominations.
