Solar Opposites Review

Rick and Morty is known for insane space adventures that take the titular uncle and nephew duo (and sometimes the rest of their depressing suburban family) into grotesque, weird, violent, and disturbing planets, galaxies, alternate timelines, and various other sci-fi landscapes. You might expect more of the same from the new Hulu animated series Solar Opposites since it hails from from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland and series writer Mike McMahan, especially since it follows a “family” of aliens stranded on Earth who are forced to deal with the dredges of humanity and suburban life. Even though the animation style, character design and sense of humor falls in line with Rick and Morty, this sidesplitting, raucously hilarious show brings something different to the table, delivering a quality, clever comedy that is somehow simultaneously darkly deranged and charmingly lighthearted. Middleditch and Schwartz

(Welcome to The Quarantine Stream, a new series where the /Film team shares what they’ve been watching while social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.)

The Series: Middleditch & Schwartz

Where You Can Stream It: Netflix

The Pitch: Middleditch & Schwartz is a two-person improvised show. Based on a short audience Q&A where someone in the crowd tells the duo about something they’re exciting about or dreading in the future, Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) and Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog, Parks and Recreation) create characters, scenes, and storylines off the cuff, not knowing where they’ll end up, all based on what they’ve just hear from the audience. No hooks, no gimmicks, no scripts, and no props besides two chairs. It’s two great friends with incredible comedic instincts making everything up in front of your eyes. Every show is totally different, and you never know what’s going to happen next.

Why It’s Essential Quarantine Viewing: Right now, you could probably do with an extended period of hearty laughter as the we continue to tread the boiling waters of hell on Earth. Look no further than three completely improvised comedy specials from Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz, partners in comedy who have each starred in a variety of movies and TV shows you know and love. The two actors also happen to be expertly trained comedians who went on tour over the past couple years, doing long-form improv shows for sold out audiences across the United States. Three of those were recorded at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, and they’re now available in perpetuity on Netflix. Read More »

Silicon Valley Season 6 Trailer

HBO’s hit comedy series Silicon Valley is coming to an end this year with the sixth season. Not only is this the final season, but it’s also a bit of a shorter season with only seven episodes wrapping up the exploits of the tech company Pied Piper and the computer geniuses who founded it. Now the first Silicon Valley season 6 trailer has arrived, and it prominently features Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch) testifying in front of the US Congress about the security of user data. And not unlike the real world instance of Mark Zuckerberg doing the same thing, it’s very cringeworthy. Read More »

Silicon Valley Season 6

HBO’s tech comedy series Silicon Valley was already renewed for a sixth season back in April this year. However, the show was renewed alongside the freshman comedy series Barry, and both shows are executive produced by Alec Berg. That seems to have created a bit of a scheduling challenge, because now production on the Silicon Valley season 6 is being delayed until summer 2019 in order to allow Berg to finish up his work on the second season of Barry first. But there might be more to this story behind the scenes. Read More »

Replicas Trailer

Keanu Reeves signed on to star in the sci-fi thriller Replicas back in 2014. That was…*checks calendar*…four years ago, and the movie still hasn’t come out yet. Jeffrey Nachmanoff (Traitor) took over the director’s chair from original director Tanya Wexler (Hysteria), so that may have been part of the reason for the delay. The film finally debuted its first trailer last October with the promise that it would be released sometime in 2018, but things have been quiet ever since.

Now a new trailer has arrived – but weirdly, it’s being billed as an “official teaser” that’s almost 45 seconds shorter than the full trailer that dropped last year. What’s going on with this movie? Read More »
