Are you ready for more goofy pet antics? Illumination Entertainment certainly hopes so, because The Secret Life of Pets 2 is coming next summer. The first movie became an animation juggernaut, pulling in over $875 million worldwide, but will the sequel fare as well?
Check out the first trailer below, in which Patton Oswalt replaces original star Louis C.K. and leads a cast that includes returning members Jenny Slate, Kevin Hart, and Eric Stonestreet and new additions like Tiffany Haddish, Nick Kroll, and Pete Holmes.

Animation studio Illumination Entertainment had a huge hit with 2016’s The Secret Life of Pets, so a sequel was inevitable. But The Secret Life of Pets 2 cast just got a whole lot more interesting, because Harrison Ford has come on board in his first voiceover role for an animated feature film. And that’s not all – Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish is also going to be in this movie, which is about as perfect an addition to that world as I could imagine.

The Secret Life of Pets was a runaway family film hit at the box office after pulling in $368.3 million at the domestic box office and $875.4 million worldwide. Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment were so happy with the results that they quickly ordered a sequel to arrive in the summer of 2019. But in light of recent events, that sequel will be missing one of the original film’s voice stars.
Louis C.K. has been removed as one of the voice stars of The Secret Life of Pets 2 following his admission to committing several acts of sexual misconduct throughout his career. The comedian played Max, the Jack Russell Terrier who got caught up in a series of misadventures in New York City along with his unwelcome new mutt companion Duke (Eric Stonestreet), but he will now be replaced with another actor. Illumination and Universal Pictures have the next six years covered. The production company, founded in 2007, has made some monster hits with Despicable Me, Minions, The Secret Life of Pets, and most recently, Sing, which is getting a sequel. Today, Illumination announced four new release dates.

You knew this was coming: Sing, Illumination’s “American Idol, but with animals” movie, is getting a sequel. Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have just set the follow-up for Christmas 2020, putting it in the same slot that did so well for the first Sing.
Meanwhile, The Secret Life of Pets 2 is getting pushed back a year to 2018, and Minions 2 is moving up just a tiny bit. Read More »

One of the few unqualified success stories to emerge from the barren wasteland that was this summer’s box office was The Secret Life of Pets. The animated adventure by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment has earned over $400 worldwide, with several big markets still to go, and was even warmly received by critics to boot. (Well, our own Ethan Anderton excepted.)
