the new pope behind the scenes clip

It’s been a while since HBO debuted The Young Pope in 2016. But it’s also been a while since HBO debuted the limited series The New PopePaolo Sorrentino‘s follow-up season to his outrageous papacy drama. So why are we talking about The New Pope again, four months after the series premiered on HBO in January this year? You may have missed the series amid the growing anxiety around the spreading coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

But now that we’re all stuck at home for the foreseeable future, Warner Bros. and HBO are intent on reminding you that The New Pope is one of the many titles available to stream now that could relieve you of your boredom. And that reminder comes in the form of a handy The New Pope behind-the-scenes clip, which introduces the many characters — Pope or otherwise — in the limited series.

It’s Pope Season! Not only do we have The Two Popes arriving on Netflix this month, we also have The New Pope headed to HBO a month later. That’s enough popes for everyone, I think. The New Pope is the second season of The Young Pope, in which Jude Law wore sunglasess, smoked cigarettes, and also became the leader of the Catholic Church. This new season has a new pope (thus the title), played by John Malkovich. But Law’s pope isn’t out of the picture just yet. Watch The New Pope trailer below.

You can’t teach a new pope old tricks, and John Malkovich‘s John Paul III is certainly more of a stickler for tradition than Jude Law‘s flashy Pope Pius XIII of Paolo Sorrentino’s The Young Pope. But thankfully, in the follow-up season of the HBO series The New Pope, this successor seems to have just as much of an ego.

“Everyone in the world should know who the pope is,” John Paul III tells his staff. “It’s not vanity; it’s necessity.” But despite enjoying the fruits of his new role, the new pope does harbor a paranoia that that mischievous young pope may wake from his coma after all. Watch The New Pope trailer.

HBO’s trailer for The New Pope may not have you losing your religion, but it may just change your avenue of worship. I’m talking of course, about the trailer being mostly comprised of a slow-motion shot of Jude Law, dressed solely in a white Speedo, walking down a beach in front of bikini-clad girls playing volleyball. It’s heavenly. It’s bliss. It’s the next step in the meme-ification of The Young PopePaolo Sorrentino‘s wildly self-aware papal drama. The follow-up season to the acclaimed 2016 limited series, The New Pope introduces Lenny Belardo’s (Law) apparent successor, played by John Malkovich, who is much more buttoned up than his Speedo-clad predecessor.
