It may only be June, but it’s going to take some damn good comedy to top the fits of laughter brought upon by Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. After The Lonely Island trio (Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone) made a splash with their digital shorts on Saturday Night Live, it’s amazing it took them this long to put together a mockumentary following the rise and fall of a faux musician in the real world music industry. But for as long as it took, the hilarity delivered by Popstar makes it well worth the wait.

The Lonely Island joined forces 15 years ago. Instead of waiting around and struggling to find work, the trio — Jorma Taccone, Andy Samberg, and Akiva Schaffer — began generating their own, which led to them working on Saturday Night Live. “Lazy Sunday,” “Dick in a Box,” “Laser Cats,” and their other digital shorts are some of SNL’s most memorable sketches from the past decade or so. The Lonely Island has always had a talent for music as well, a skill that’s on full display in their latest project, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
Samberg stars as Conner4Real, a pop star struggling with ego and failure, and Schaffer and Taccone co-star as his former bandmates. The trio co-wrote the film, and Schaffer and Taccone also co-directed. Taccone, whose last feature was MacGruber (he’ll make the sequel “before he dies,” he promised), was kind enough to discuss Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping with us.
Below, read our Jorma Taccone interview (minor spoilers are ahead).

Even though Saturday Night Live is done until the new television season starts in the fall, this week we’re getting a big dose of comedy from some of the sketch show’s veteran performers and writers. The Lonely Island is bringing their music industry mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping to theaters on June 3, and Universal Pictures is putting out everything they can to spread awareness.
Following the music video for “The Finest Girl” that was released during the season finale of Saturday Night Live, a new video featuring Andy Samberg as faux rapper Conner4Real has the artist doing a little freestyle song about just how weird he is. The weird things he does include using a banana as a phone and taking the middle seat on a plane. Watch the new Popstar music video after the jump. Read More »
We’re just one week away from the release of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. The R-rated comedy from the comedic rap trio known as The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone) features an endless array of cameos, some playing themselves, some playing ridiculous characters. However, there’s one cameo in the movie where instead of seeing a well-known face, you only see a certain part of their anatomy that is sparsely seen on film.
In Popstar, there’s a really funny sequence involving a fully exposed penis, and while you never see the face of the person the male member belongs to, the identity of this person is more than surprising. Find about the Popstar nude scene below. Read More »
Not too long ago, a couple tracks from the soundtrack of this summer’s mockumentary comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping debuted online, showcasing the latest tunes crafted by The Lonely Island. The rap trio formed by Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone got their start on Saturday Night Live with signature tracks like “Lazy Sunday” and “I’m On a Boat.” For the season finale this past weekend, they brought their rhymes back to SNL in a new music video for yet another track from Popstar. With subject matter that tackles sex and Osama Bin Laden, it’s the most ridiculous one yet.

After delivering some of the best recorded content Saturday Night Live has ever had, The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone) have collaborated on a feature film that feels like it could have been inspired by one of their SNL Digital Shorts.
This summer brings the new comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, a mockumentary following rapper Connor4Real (Samberg) as he releases his new album and goes on tour. A new Popstar trailer shows more of Connor’s stupid antics and the entourage who keeps his ego intact. Have you ever wanted to see a wedding with wolves and Seal? This is your movie.

For anyone who has ever loved the music videos that The Lonely Island rap trio (Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone) put together for Saturday Night Live, this summer’s music industry mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping will be quite the treat. Not only can I tell you that the movie a non-stop laugh riot, but it also features an incredible array of new songs from The Lonely Island, and two of them have just been released as singles for you to listen to immediately.
There’s the catchy “I’m So Humble” featuring Adam Levine accompanying Andy Samberg as rapper Connor4Real, and it’s all about just how modest the chart-topping, influential rapper is. And there’s also “Mona Lisa” which boldly declares the classic painting by Leonardo Da Vinci as an “overrated piece of shit.”

Last night brought the MTV Movie Awards to the televisions of teenagers and people with nothing better to do on a Sunday night. Other than the reveal of a new clip from Captain America: Civil War, an outstanding new trailer for Suicide Squad, and a second teaser trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, memorable moments from the show were few and far between. But the few that were memorable at least brought some laughs. Oh, and some rap too.
Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart (who hosted the show) delivered a rap to pay tribute to the movies of 2015, and they even threw some shade at the Oscars by pointing out they were honoring the movies that viewers had actually seen. In addition, Will Smith was given the MTV equivalent of lifetime achievement known as the Generation Award. But before he was given the honor, The Lonely Island honored him as only they could. The Lonely Island movie — which the crew itself has jokingly referred to as the Top Secret Untitled Lonely Island Movie — is top secret no more. The film now has a title, or at least the group is going public with the title they may have had all along: Conner4real. The three members of the group (Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer, and Andy Samberg) will appear, with Samberg playing a rapper whose career tanks, leading him to reform the boy band that gave him his first big break.
