Some people say the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year. Unfortunately, those people are fools. For if anyone ever makes such a claim to me, I loudly scoff in their faces and quickly set ’em straight: the actual most wonderful time of the year is whenever a major movie studio drops a batch of new release dates without any titles attached to them. And today’s my lucky day, folks, because The Walt Disney Company has just reorganized its upcoming release schedule, and there are Untitled Marvel Movies as far as the eye can see. *sniffs* It’s beautiful. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck became Hollywood superstars after the success of Good Will Hunting. Not only did the longtime friends star in the movie, but they won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay that year. But that was 22 years ago, and despite taking home one of the most prestigious awards Hollywood has to offer, they haven’t written together again. That’s about to change
Not too long ago, we learned Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were finally reteaming as writers for a movie called The Last Duel, a movie they co-wrote with Nicole Holofcener that will be directed by Ridley Scott. With Matt Damon making the publicity rounds for the release of Ford vs Ferrari this weekend, the actor and writer got a chance to explain why it took so long to reteam with his old Boston buddy for this forthcoming project. Adam Driver is 35 years old, and he’s already worked with filmmakers like Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg, Jim Jarmusch, Terry Gilliam, and the Coen Brothers, just to name a few. And very soon, he may add Sir Ridley Scott to his impressive list of collaborators.
Driver is currently in early talks to join the cast of The Last Duel, Scott’s upcoming period piece that has Matt Damon set to star in one of the lead roles. And while Damon was originally said to be facing off against his old pal Ben Affleck in this movie, it now appears that Driver will be taking the role that was seemingly intended for Affleck, while Affleck himself shifts into a supporting role instead. Fresh off her Emmy win for her tour-de-force performance in Killing Eve, Jodie Comer is setting her sights on her next big project. And on paper, her next project is a doozy. Comer is in talks to work with some of the biggest names in Hollywood in the Ridley Scott film The Last Duel, based on the real events of the last officially sanctioned duel in 14th century France. Comer will be starring opposite Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, but her role might be cause for concern: she is in talks to play the wife whose sexual assault leads to a former soldier appealing the king to grant a duel to the death.

It has been a turbulent few years in Hollywood. The industry has been forced to deal with latent racism with the #OscarsSoWhite movement as well as the festering, dangerous misogyny brought to light by the #MeToo revolution. Conversations about the lack of diversity and inclusion both in front of the camera and behind it have spurred action. An industry like Hollywood takes time to move towards a more equal playing field. But the increase in diverse storytellers and actors announced for upcoming film and television projects shows promise.
Which is how it comes as a shock that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck would team up for the first time since Good Will Hunting to tell the story of two men fighting to the death over the alleged rape of a woman. What’s even more of a shock is that the actors, along with director Ridley Scott, were taken aback by the immediate backlash.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, the Boston-bred pals who won an Oscar for writing Good Will Hunting in the late 1990s, have not co-written another script since – at least not one that’s actually gotten made into a movie. But it looks like that may change imminently, because Ridley Scott is now set to direct The Last Duel, a revenge film that’s an adaptation of Eric Jager’s novel. Affleck and Damon co-wrote the movie with Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said, Can You Ever Forgive Me?), and it’s a period piece set in the 1300s France.
