In case Whiplash and La La Land weren’t enough evidence that Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle loves jazz, he has a new Netflix series that will reinforce his passion.
The Eddy is an eight-episode series taking place in various neighborhoods of Paris, following New York jazz pianist Elliot Udo (André Holland of Moonlight) as he runs a struggling club called The Eddy, which features a house band that includes his on-again-off-again girlfriend Maja (Joanna Kuling). When he was only 32 years old, Damien Chazelle became the youngest person to ever win the Academy Award for Best Director. After winning that prize for La La Land, he directed the Neil Armstrong-centric First Man and then did what most high-profile filmmakers seem to be doing these days: took a trip to the world of streaming. The result is The Eddy, an upcoming Netflix series about Chazelle’s passion/obsession: jazz.

His movies Whiplash and La La Land are chock-full of jazz, baby, and he’s not ashamed to keep those sweet, sweet jazz tunes swinging into his next project – The Eddy. The Netflix series was created by Chazelle, who also directs some episodes, and follows a once-celebrated jazz pianist played by André Holland who owns a struggling jazz club in Paris. André Holland will star as the owner of a failing jazz club in Paris. Chazelle will executive produce the series, and direct the first two episodes, marking his first foray into TV.
