Following in the footsteps of Tosh.0 and Drunk History, ABC’s adaptation of the comic series Stumptown starring Cobie Smulders has just become another series to get canceled despite already being renewed for another season.
Stumptown debuted on ABC last fall to solid reviews and ratings, but the coronavirus pandemic has forced networks to pinch pennies, especially for shows that require tons of logistical hurdles due to enhanced safety measures and protocols. With Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD coming to an end with the seventh season, new comic book blood is needed to fill ABC’s network timeslots. Unfortunately, most the Marvel action is headed to Disney+, so ABC has grabbed another comic book property that will take them into the TV comfort zone of procedural crime drama.
Stumptown is based on the Oni Press comic of the same name, and it follows Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) as a former Marine who has become a disheveled, seemingly directionless private investigator with a good chunk of debt to dig herself out of. That makes her the perfect candidate to get caught up in plenty of random investigations with some seedy criminals and frustrated law enforcement. In many ways, Comic-Con is often all about betting on a sure thing. Fans will line up hours, if not days, in advance to guarantee being in the room to see something related to a film series or TV show they love. So what about the newcomers? The fresh projects that snatch up real estate between the big dogs, hoping to hog the crowds at the right moment to convince the hordes that this is the next thing they’re going to love, this is the next thing they’ll line up in advance to see?
Very often, these shows simply vanish. But occasionally, you see something that instantly and immediately feels special. That was very much the case with Amazon’s Undone, an animated series that, quite frankly, looks and feels unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Meanwhile, two new ABC shows, Emergence and Stumptown, revealed that the wild west of streaming is still the place to go if you want something fresh and challenging, because these shows feel carefully calculated to live on basic cable. For one of them, that may not be a problem. For the other…we’ll just have to wait and see.
