Hobo With a Shotgun started life as a  trailer for a grindhouse film that didn’t exist, and writer/director Jason Eisener spent much of this year shooting an expanded feature version starring Rutger Hauer as the title character. The film is scheduled for the Sundance Film Festival in January, but while there it won’t have to go through the rigors of a sale for US distribution rights. Magnet, the genre arm of Magnolia, has picked up the film for distribution in the US. Read More »

Movie Trailer: Hobo With a Shotgun

Add another title to the ever-growing list of meta-films, this one being possibly the most ridiculous of all. It’s odd enough that the fake trailer for Machete was made into a movie, but that project had Robert Rodriguez (and a budget) backing it, not to mention it was originally envisioned as a feature-length film prior to the trailer even being made. Hobo With a Shotgun, meanwhile, began life as an entry for a SXSW contest for Grindhouse, and was made by a guy working at a comic book store.

And yet here we are, with a genuine trailer for the feature adaptation of the no-budget trailer, starring none other than Rutger Hauer. Check it out after the break. Read More »

Prior to his breakout as an actor in District 9, Sharlto Copley was pursuing a career intended to be located behind the camera rather than in front of it. He worked behind the scenes on Alive in Joburg and District 9 (and directed himself as D9’s Wikus in a brief comedy piece) and has been working on his directorial debut for some time with co-director and production partner Simon Hansen. Called Spoon, the film is either complete or approaching completion, and there is a short teaser to announce the project to the public. Read More »

It’s a good day to be a fan of aging men with a violent streak. Over the last week we’ve had behind the scenes video glimpses of both the Coen Brothers version of True Grit and Jason Eisener‘s feature-length expansion of his fake grindhouse trailer Hobo With a Shotgun. Now we’ve got still images of Jeff Bridges and Rutger Hauer in their respective costumes for each film. Read More »

The full-length version of the film stars Rutger Hauer as the title character, and started shooting this past Monday. Eisener posted a little montage of behind the scenes and actual footage to YouTube, and you can check it out below. Read More »

“I’m gonna sleep in your bloody carcasses tonight!”

In 2007 there was a contest at SXSW that invited filmmakers to create their own fake grindhouse-style movie trailers to go along with the promotion for the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez film Grindhouse. The winner, by a great margin, was Hobo with a Shotgun, from Nova Scotia director Jason Eisener.

The young director, who worked in a comic book store when his film won the contest, saw Hobo with a Shotgun attached to Canadian prints of Grindhouse, and immediately started talking about the possibility of a feature-length version. It’s taken a while to make that happen (Eisener has made the very popular short Treevenge in the interim) but now the feature version of of his grindhouse trailer is about to begin production. In the lead role, he’s got a new hobo: Rutger Hauer. Is there any better casting choice than that? Read More »
