New Blu-ray Releases Glass

Physical media will live forever! That’s what I keep telling myself every night as I cry myself to sleep. For now, at least, physical media is sticking around, and that’s where this column comes in – rounding up the Blu-ray releases you might want to check out, while Blu-rays still exist. This week, we have the confusing conclusion to M. Night Shyamalan’s superhero trilogy; a charming Amblin-esque throwback from the director of Attack the Block; Keanu Reeves playing God; a crime-thriller guaranteed to piss some people off; and some wicked witchcraft. In addition to all that, her about the outrageously complicated “Escape Room in a Box” I was sent to promote the upcoming Blu-ray release of Escape Room. These are the new Blu-ray releases and their special features you should check out this week and beyond.

Aquaman Box Office

Aquaman has only been in theaters around the world for over a month, but the blockbuster comic book movie has already crossed the $1 billion mark. It’s the first DC Extended Universe movie to reach that box office milestone, and it’s only the 37th film in history to cross that threshold. Who would have thought it would be DC’s most mocked superhero making this achievement?

However, even though Aquaman now has over $1.02 billion for its worldwide box office haul, the past weekend’s domestic haul of $17.6 million wasn’t enough to take the top spot. Instead, The Upside starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston exceeded analysts expectations by earning $19.59 million and landing at the top of the charts, dethroning the King of Atlantis. Read More »

Replicas Trailer

In case you were curious, Replicas is a Christmas movie. You may find that fact, or the fact that multiple scenes in this sci-fi thriller reference the holiday season or literally take place at a Christmas tree-shopping site in Puerto Rico, superfluous or inexplicable. Perhaps I’ve buried the lede, because you see, Replicas itself is quite inexplicable. Here, we have the first wide-release contender of 2019 for the title of Most Utterly Bizarre Film of the Year. There’s no sane metric under which I could recommend this film, but its badness is quite the thing to behold.

Trailer Round-Up 12-12-18

It’s the most wonderful tiiiiiiiime of the year: trailer round-up time.

What’s that under your Christmas tree? It’s a trailer, covered in shiny gift-wrap! And look – there’s another one, in the far back corner, covered in douglas fir needles. I count eight different trailers underneath your tree, and you can metaphorically unwrap and watch ’em all below. (Don’t worry about how I know what’s under your tree. That’s not important right now.)

Replicas Trailer

Keanu Reeves signed on to star in the sci-fi thriller Replicas back in 2014. That was…*checks calendar*…four years ago, and the movie still hasn’t come out yet. Jeffrey Nachmanoff (Traitor) took over the director’s chair from original director Tanya Wexler (Hysteria), so that may have been part of the reason for the delay. The film finally debuted its first trailer last October with the promise that it would be released sometime in 2018, but things have been quiet ever since.

Now a new trailer has arrived – but weirdly, it’s being billed as an “official teaser” that’s almost 45 seconds shorter than the full trailer that dropped last year. What’s going on with this movie? Read More »

Replicas NYCC Panel

How many times can we see the Frankenstein concept of bringing back dead people play out on the big screen, you ask?  Short answer: countless times. Keanu Reeves is starring in Replicas, the latest in a long line of films, mostly told from a male perspective mind you, which tampers with death and recreation. If you haven’t seen it already.

I have nothing against films that explore the idea of cloning. Though, I think BBC America’s small screen gem Orphan Black did an exceptional job taking on themes of feminism, sisterhood, and the politics of science.

But according to Reeves, Replicas is more about how man manipulates nature for his own selfish needs, which makes me significantly less excited about it. “There’s an idea of control, an impulse to create and manifest. This film is having a conversation with that.”

Find out more about what unfolded during the Replicas NYCC panel below. Read More »
