When it comes to upcoming Star Wars books, there’s a lot of interest in the publishing initiative known as The High Republic. But since new details on that upcoming roster of stories set 200 years before the Skywalker saga arrived yesterday, today’s Lucasfilm Publishing panel from New York Comic-Con focused on some of the other upcoming books from a galaxy far, far away. This December, fans of the Star Wars series The Mandalorian will be able to get their hands on some of the incredible concept art from the making of the first season. Lucasfilm and Abrams Books are releasing The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian by Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak, and he’s just revealed a sneak peek at some of the concept art from inside the book, including alternate designs for the Mandalorian himself and some adorable new images of The Child affectionately called Baby Yoda. Concept artist Ralph McQuarrie helped craft the vision for the original Star Wars trilogy with his stunning concept paintings and early sketches. And long after the legendary concept artist’s passing in 2012, McQuarrie continues to influence the look of that galaxy far, far away even today. The Lucasfilm creative team had incorporated parts of McQuarrie’s original unused concept art in films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the prequel film Solo: A Star Wars Story, and they again return to McQuarrie’s vision for inspiration with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
