NOS4A2 Review

Joe Hill‘s NOS4A2 is a dense, twisty, unlikely tale, so it feels exactly right that the pilot episode of AMC’s adaptation should be so stubbornly unwilling to explain itself to viewers unfamiliar with the source material. Nothing is spelled out here; nothing is synopsized or tidily introduced. Unlike so many pilots – that act as a string of bite-sized quotes built in service of future “Previously on…” segments – NOS4A2 is interested only in telling this story at its own pace, with an admirable confidence that the audience will eventually catch up to where it’s going.

But even for those new to the world of Christmasland, to Charlie Manx and his Rolls-Royce Wraith, this first episode is deeply compelling, hooking viewers on an emotional, visceral level well before the plot fully reveals itself.

Want to go to Christmasland? Sounds fun, doesn’t it!? Well…it’s not. Christmasland is actually an alternate dimension full of vampire children – a place frequented by immortal child murderer Charlie Manx. And yeah, sure, it’s always Christmas there, but don’t forget the stuff about the vampire kids and the murderer I just mentioned. Based on the book by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King), NOS4A2 is headed to AMC next year. Ashleigh Cummings also stars, playing the only person who ever managed to escape from Manx. See the NOS4A2 photo below.

nos4a2 TV series

AMC is really doubling down on the “gruesome horror adaptation” thing. With The Walking Dead still shambling along and the adaptation of the sure-to-be-controversial Preacher waiting in the wings, the network has decided to adapt Joe Hill‘s excellent novel NOS4A2 into a series. That is one hell of a horror trifecta right there – nothing says AMC like flesh-eating carnage, blasphemous comic book adaptations, and shows about immortal creeps stealing the souls of innocent children.

Hit the jump for everything we currently know about the NOS4A2 TV series.
