nightmare alley update

When word came out back in 2017 that Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro was working on a remake of an old noir film called Nightmare Alley, I thought the same thing I always think when a new del Toro project pops up: I’ll believe it when I see it. I love most of his movies, but so many of his projects end up floundering that it’s hard to get too excited until something concrete starts to form.

But Nightmare Alley is moving forward, and he recently hired a spectacular cast that’s going to be led by Bradley Cooper. And in a new interview, del Toro has given a few more details about his remake, including its intended rating and the fact that there will be no supernatural elements at all. Read his comments below.

Guillermo del Toro‘s return to directing is attracting some serious talent. New reports indicate Toni Collette, Cate Blanchett, Rooney MaraMichael Shannon, and more are all in being considered or are in talks to join del Toro’s Nightmare Alley cast. Bradley Cooper is already set to star in the adaptation of the novel of the same name, about a con-man who teams up with a psychiatrist. The del Toro/DiCaprio team-up was apparently too good to be true. Leonardo DiCaprio was previously in talks to join Guillermo del Toro‘s return to directing, Nightmare Alley. Cooper is now said to be “circling” the project, which is an adaptation of the William Lindsay Gresham novel of the same name – which was previously adapted into the 1947 movie Nightmare Alley.

nightmare alley remake

Guillermo del Toro is ready to return to directing after winning an Oscar for The Shape of Water. The filmmaker will helm a remake of the 1940s noir Nightmare Alley, and he’s already attracting some serious star power. Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to star in del Toro’s movie, which will follow a con-man who teams up with a psychic, and then later a psychiatrist, to scam people. Since del Toro’s involved, I’m assuming some sort of sexy monster will show up at some point. But maybe not.

Guillermo del Toro nightmare alley

Guillermo del Toro may have recently made a film about a god of the seas, but the Mexican-American director is the king of unfinished projects.

The Shape of Water director has announced that he will be helming a new project, a remake of the 1947 noir Nightmare Alley. But to add more to his ever-growing slate, del Toro is also attached to produce Antlers, a supernatural horror film for Fox Searchlight. They both sound like exciting projects for the acclaimed director, who is truly one of the most visionary and creative filmmakers working today. So why am I not over the moon about the news of a new del Toro film? Because del Toro has an unfortunate history of not following through.
