After literally years of hype, Netflix has finally started pulling back the curtains on The Defenders, the crossover series that brings together Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). We first spoke with Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez by phone when they wrote and produced the second season of Daredevil. They are big fans of /Film, especially Ramirez, so when I met them in person at a Marvel Television cocktail party for the Television Critics Association, it was fun to geek out together in person.
Ramirez and Petrie went from showrunning Daredevil to showrunning the long-anticipated Marvel TV series The Defenders. A few days ago, Daredevil star Charlie Cox let slip that Netflix and Marvel’s The Defenders would be shooting by the end of the year. Now Marvel has officially announced the first step toward making that plan a reality. Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez, showrunners of Daredevil season 2, will be back to serve as showrunners on the original series, which unites Daredevil‘s Cox, Jessica Jones‘ Krysten Ritter, Luke Cage‘s Mike Colter, and Iron Fist‘s Finn Jones. Daredevil season two introduces new characters on screen. Jon Bernthal stars as Frank Castle, Marvel comic’s antihero the Punisher, and Elodie Yung stars as classic Daredevil love interest Elektra. There’s some new blood behind the scenes too, or at least promoted blood. Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie graduated to showrunners this year, after working as writers and producers on season one.
