Over the past few years, alternate readings have abounded suggesting that the 1999 science fiction masterpiece The Matrix is an allegory for the transgender experience. Now Lilly Wachowski, one of the film’s writers and directors, has officially confirmed that those ideas were intentional. Watch her speak about how the “corporate world wasn’t ready” to acknowledge such a connection in the video below. Read More »
Lilly Wachowski, one half of the directing duo behind the original The Matrix, was on a Television Critics Association panel for her Showtime series Work in Progress, which she produced and co-wrote with co-creators Abby McEnany, who stars, and Tim Mason, who directs. After the panel, /Film had a chance to ask her about Warner Bros.’ next Matrix movie, which has been in the works for a couple of years.
Lilly co-created, co-wrote, and co-directed the original Matrix trilogy alongside her sister Lana Wachowski, and while Lilly confirmed that she’s not involved with the new Matrix movie, she did say that she hopes it can improve upon the 1999 film that started it all. Read More »
Earlier this week, we wrote about how there’s a chance The Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray might not return for the upcoming Fast 9. But this is one of Universal’s biggest moneymakers, so somebody has to take on the tremendous challenge of leading the massive production as the series barrels toward its planned ending. Who could successfully shoulder the weight of a long-running film franchise yet still deliver an entertaining spectacle in a quick and efficient manner? I’ve come up with 10 filmmakers I think are up to the task, so read on for my list of who could be the Fast and Furious 9 director.

Because Netflix does not release their internal data, we never know what exact numbers make a show a hit on everyone’s go-to streaming service. But whatever numbers those numbers are, the science fiction series Sense8 was not hitting them. The series was cancelled earlier this month following the debut of its second season and the show’s small but extremely passionate fanbase let their voices be heard. They were not going to let this one go down without a fight.
And now, a glimmer of hope: while the show will not return for a third season, a two-hour special is on the way for 2018, hopefully giving the show the grand finale it warrants and the fans the closure they desire.

Yesterday, a shocking piece of news was unleashed upon the world: Donald Trump’s 2005 income tax papers finally proved that rich people pay much less percentage-wise than you and me and that tax changes he’s trying to get approved will allow people like him to pay even less! And then, Hollywood responded with some shocking news of its own. The Hollywood Reporter broke a huge entertainment news story: Warner Bros is developing a reboot of The Matrix without the involvement of original franchise creators Lilly and Lana Wachowski and possibly starring Michael B. Jordan.
My immediate response is that this is a horrible idea. After dwelling on it, I compiled a list of reasons to leave this franchise alone…and then decided to play devil’s advocate and also look at the reasons why The Matrix should be rebooted.

With apologies to my loved ones, the best Christmas gift I got last year was the Sense8 holiday special. It had been over a year since the first season hit Netflix, and the two-hour extravaganza had everything I’d hoped for from the return — drama, action, romance, tons of earnest metaphysical nonsense, and, yes, even a meticulously choreographed orgy. Best of all, it heralded the arrival of even more episodes to come in the new year, with Sense8 season 2 scheduled to hit in May.
Of course, May’s still a ways away. But Netflix isn’t leaving us completely high and dry. They’ve just dropped a big batch of Sense8 season 2 images, teasing more good times, more bad times, and lots of sweet cluster meetings that are probably going to make me cry. Flip through the new photos below.

Netflix comes bearing gifts. Whether they’re wanted or unwanted gifts, though, will depend on your tolerance for Lana and Lilly Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski‘s brand of metaphysical sci-fi insanity. The streaming service has officially announced that a Sense8 Christmas special will drop later this month, just as we suspected. But that’s not all. They’ve also confirmed a Sense8 season 2 premiere date for 2017, and shared a batch of first-look photos from the new run of episodes. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
The duo formerly known as the Wachowski brothers, the creators and directors of The Matrix trilogy and the sorely underrated Speed Racer, previously became known as the Wachowski siblings when Lana Wachowski came out as a transgender woman in 2012. Now they will be known as the Wachowski sisters, as Lilly Wachowski, formerly called Andy Wachowski, has also come out as transgender.
After the jump, you can read a full statement from Wachowski about coming out as transgender, which includes a frustrating explanation as to why she was forced to come out this week. Read More »
