“When Disney does a fairy tale, it becomes the definitive version of that story,” said John Lasseter. “One that doesn’t have a definitive version is Jack and the Beanstalk.” So began Disney’s announcement of their next animated fairy tale movie, Gigantic, at D23.
Disney is already in production on the feature, which has assembled a top-notch team: Nathan Greno (Tangled) is directing, Dorothy McKim (Get a Horse!) is directing, and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Frozen) are providing music. As the unfathomable success of Frozen continues to sustain, Disney is being very careful with how they exploit the title. They’re slowly but surely rolling the film and its characters into theme parks. There are no immediate plans for a sequel, but a short film will be out in March. And there have been talks of a stage adaptation too, which just took a major step forward.
The Frozen stage show just officially announced its writers, songwriters and director. Good news, Frozen fans, they’re familiar. The writer and director will be Jennifer Lee, the co-director of the film. Then Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, the Oscar-winning duo behind the songs in the original film, are doing the songs for the show. So basically, the Frozen musical is in capable, familiar hands. Read more on the Frozen Broadway musical below. Read More »

Disney’s Bob the Musical has been in the works for a full decade at this point, but it’s been slow going. One of the last updates we got on it was that 21 Jump Street‘s Phil Lord and Chris Miller were negotiating to direct, but even that ultimately amounted to nothing as they’ve since moved on. However, it finally seems to be gaining some fresh momentum as Rock of Ages scribe Allan Loeb has been tapped to write the musical comedy.
As for what’s inspired this sudden uptick in activity, well, we’re not privy to the conversations that took place. But if we had to guess, we’d say that Frozen‘s lasting success probably had a little something to do with it — Bob the Musical has long had Frozen composers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez to write the tunes. Hit the jump for the latest on this long-gestating project.

An animated adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Snow Queen has been in the development at Disney on and off for about a decade now, but a few encouraging signs suggest we’re finally getting pretty close to seeing the story hit the big screen. Well, relatively speaking.
Late last year, the studio announced a November 27, 2013 release date for a revamped CG version of the project, and followed up a few months later by casting Kristen Bell in a lead role. This week brings several more big updates: Idina Menzel has landed a major part opposite Bell, while the music department has added some exciting fresh blood in the form of husband-and-wife duo Robert Lopez (Book of Mormon) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Winnie the Pooh). And on top of all that, we also have a new official synopsis. More details after the jump.
