Kingsman: The Golden Circle may not be the height of realism in action filmmaking, but when it comes to the visual effects, there’s some impressive work done to bring the world of violent spies to life in Matthew Vaughn‘s comic book adaptation.

Before going any further, let’s get this out of the way: I loved the first Kingsman movie. On a purely visual, gets-your-adrenaline-going level, Matthew Vaughn has achieved the platonic ideal of the comic book movie. The Kingsman movies spectacles of bright colors, stylish costumes, outlandish violence, and a complete lack of attention to the laws of physics, all scored to pop songs that are immediately recognizable. To be sure, I loved the physical act of watching Kingsman: The Golden Circle. More than a few sequences got me to clap in delight. But beyond that, there’s something about this second installment that doesn’t quite click.

Cool Posts From Around the Web:
Matthew Vaughn‘s latest, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, smashes its way into theaters this weekend. The early word has not been overly kind, nor have they been devastating. “[An] exhausting, exhilarating watch,” seems to be the biggest takeaway from the film, and 20th Century Fox wants to keep that exhilaration alive while turning it into box office returns. If you’re someone who wants more Kingsman in their lives, you’re in luck, because Matthew Vaughn wants to make Kingsman 3 and then some spin-offs to boot. Are you prepared for more well-dressed people shooting guns at each other?

Even though summer may be over in a few weeks, September will be bringing us a blockbuster sequel that looks to be worthy of the season, but smart enough to avoid getting lost in the shuffle with the rest of the studio tentpoles.

This time, the British secret agents must seek the help of their American cousins, known as the Statesman, as their own headquarters has been blown off the map by a new threat.
