(Welcome to Pop Culture Imports, a column that compiles the best foreign movies and TV streaming right now.)
This is a column that operates in multitudes, because only in Pop Culture Imports would you have a fluffy romantic K-drama right next to a sobering Austrian human trafficking film. But prepare for the emotional whiplash, because that’s what the best foreign movies and TV streaming now are offering you: A South Korean character drama that doubles as a cinematic apology letter, a steamy Argentian sex drama about a woman who’s lost her libido, a harrowing Austrian trafficking film, a K-drama about an art curator who hides her double life as a fangirl, and a Golden Camera nominee that’s getting a boost from Netflix.
Fire up those subtitles and let’s get streaming.

One of those movies is David O. Russell‘s drama Joy, inspired in part by the woman who invented the Miracle Mop. The trailers have kept that detail mostly to the side in favor of dysfunctional family drama, but a couple new Joy TV spots put it front and center. Read More »

Jennifer Lawrence / David O. Russell team-ups have become a recent staple of the awards movie season, and that’s true again this year. 20th Century Fox has just released the first full-length trailer for Joy, which has Lawrence as a fierce wife and mother who overcomes adversity to start her own business empire. Robert De Niro plays her dad, and Édgar Ramírez her husband. Bradley Cooper also stars, because of course he does.

We’re well past the midpoint of the year, and we’ve already delivered our list of the Top 10 Films of 2015 So Far. I just got home from Las Vegas, where for the last week I had attended the CinemaCon convention (formerly ShoWest), the largest gathering of movie theatre exhibitors each year. The convention is packed with talks about subjects such as how to maximize profits, and features a show floor filled with the newest and best concessions equipment. More notably, most of the major movie studios hold presentations of upcoming film line-ups for the next year and beyond. Companies even show some of their films early to get some excitement from those booking the screens.
Thursday morning we saw a presentation from 20th Century Fox showcasing some of their big upcoming films including Peanuts, Poltergeist, Paper Towns, Hitman: Agent 47, Victor Frankenstein, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, Fantastic 4, The Martian, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant and David O Russell’s Joy and more. After the presentation I recorded a spoiler free 20th Century Fox CinemaCon 2015 reaction video reaction with Steve from Collider, which you can watch that now embedded after the jump.
