Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week we see what that redhead from BMX Bandits has been up to, follow a deaf mute through his trials, tribulations and sexual conquests, understand how a forest can be a living organism, get weird in France, and figure out the horrific fate of some random strangers.

Some people liked the idea behind the low-key sci-fi film Coherence, but were pretty irritated with the first teaser trailer. The movie follows the events of a night in which an “astrological anomaly” affects life on Earth, and it looks very much like a film for fans of Primer. If you want to see more, this full Coherence trailer for the film might help. It still has a few too many pull quotes, but there’s also a lot of actual meat here, too.

One of the most buzzed-about films at Fantastic Fest last year was the low-fi science fiction story Coherence. Written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, the film is partially improvised, and tells of the “reality-bending” effect an an astrological anomaly has over the course of one night. The film stars Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong and Lorene Scafaria.
