Da 5 Bloods is likely to be a key contender in the Oscar race when nominations are announced in March. But until then, Netflix is making sure the voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences get a proper look at the making of Spike Lee‘s new joint starring Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Chadwick Boseman, and Jonathan Majors. The streaming service has released a nearly 30-minute featurette on the making of Da 5 Bloods, complete with the kind of insightful and energetic commentary you love to get from Spike Lee. Like a blast of dynamite, like a punch to the gut, here comes Da 5 Bloods, the new Spike Lee Joint that arrives during a month when protests against violence aimed at Black lives continue to spread throughout the country. Lee made his film before the current climate, but in many ways, it feels almost prescient as it deals with African-Americans fighting for rights they’ve been denied for centuries. It’s not a preachy film, but it is underscored with the undeniable acknowledgment of that fight. “We been dying for this country from the very get, hoping one day they’d give us our rightful place,” says a character played by Chadwick Boseman. “All they give us is a foot up our ass.”

We already have one great adaptation of Stephen King‘s novella The Mist, thanks to writer-director Frank Darabont. He surprised us with his adaptation by departing from the original ending and giving the film the grueling finale it deserves. Darabont brought something new to the table with his adaptation, something that may help The Mist stand the test of time.
Nearly 10 years after Darabont’s last picture hit theaters, we’re getting another take on the material from SpikeTV. Below, watch The Mist trailer.

The indie Europa Report features Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium) and Michael Nyqvist (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) as members of a crew in space. The film has been fairly under the radar until now, with only a couple images, a poster, and some teaser footage to give us an idea of what to expect.
Now a trailer introduces the crew that is making a voyage to Jupiter’s moon Europa, and starts to give away glimpses of just how things go wrong as the crew is millions of miles from Earth. The found-footage aesthetic appears to be used to good effect, and there’s a final shot in this trailer that is just chilling — just as much so as anything in the trailer for Gravity. Europa Report has also been said to be very quiet and low-key, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find that this trailer makes the film look like a more conventional bit of found-footage horror in order to get audiences into the theaters. Later this summer Sharlto Copley will go into space thanks to Neill Blomkamp and the film Elysium. Before that, however, he has another sci-fi offering: the much more low-key Europa Report. The film follows a six-person team on their three-year journey to Jupiter’s moon Europa, and in an early report on the film io9 calls it “the most painstakingly accurate space movie we’ve seen in ages.”
We haven’t seen much from the film at this point apart from a quiet teaser, but now there’s a new poster and a bit more info on the film thanks to the report mentioned above. Read More »

Directors like J.J. Abrams and Christopher Nolan can try all they want to keep their plotlines under airtight wraps, but when a property has as many passionate fans as Star Trek or Batman does, it’s impossible to avoid leaks completely. A relatively lower-profile project like The Europa Report, on the other hand, has a much easier time keeping reveals under lock and key.
We first heard of the Sebastián Cordero-directed picture over a year ago, but in that time we’ve learned very little about the project. Currently, we know about as much as we did near the beginning of the year, when an image of star Sharlto Copley dropped and a viral website was launched. But at least now we can get a better feel for the film thanks to the first teaser. Check it out after the jump.
