Walking onto the set of Insidious Chapter 3 is almost exactly like walking into the Further. That’s not just because, on day 25 of a 29 day shoot, they’re shooting scenes in the Further. It’s because first-time director Leigh Whannel likes a very quiet set and everything is kept incredibly dark. How dark is it? So dark, PAs walk around the stage with flashlight head attachments. So dark that even the dim monitors around which a small group of journalists huddles in far the corner are putting off too much light. A ceiling to floor curtain is dragged in front of us to just make sure things remain dark.
After writing and co-starring in the first two films, Whannel is doing both those jobs as well as directing Insidious Chapter 3. It’s a prequel to the first two, set three years before the first movie, and is described as an origin story for Elise, Lin Shaye’s character. She’ll be called in to help the Lambert family (Stefanie Scott and Dermot Mulroney) deal with some issues in the Further, the alternate plane of existence that’s home to some of the most terrible creatures imaginable. In Insidious Chapter 3, the main villain is described as “the physical manifestation of cancer” and he was the star of the brief, frightening scene we saw shot. It’s August 12, 2014 at Delfino Stages, about 20 miles outside of Los Angeles and this is our Insidious 3 set visit. Read More »
UPDATE: We first posted an Insidious 3 trailer Monday, but that was released prematurely by the studio. The official version has now been released.
The second Insidious film was a bit of a disappointment. After the stellar, terrifying first film, the follow-up seemed to prioritize story over character and scares. Well, a new trailer for the third film, Insidious Chapter 3, heavily suggests this latest installment will fix that mistake.
Chapter 3 takes place before the first two films and explain how ghost hunter Elise (Lin Shaye) learns about The Further, the parallel dimension where the dead live and thrive. She does that via the plight of a young father (Dermot Mulroney) and his daughter (Stefanie Scott).
The latest Insidious 3 trailer is super creepy while really keeping the story hidden behind a bevy of scares, creatures and mood. It’s a great set up for what’s to come. Check out the Insidious Chapter 3 trailer , and new poster, below. Read More »
They story of the Lambert family concluded in Insidious Chapter 2, but the ending of that film teased a whole new world. What we saw there will expand in Insidious Chapter 3, written and directed by series co-creator Leigh Whannell. The new sequel is currently scheduled for release April 3, 2015.
That’s pretty close, so casting has begun leading into a July start date. Dermot Mulroney is the first addition as the star of the film. Read more below. Read More »
The two Insidious films, released in 2011 and 2013, were written by Leigh Whannell and director James Wan, the same pair that created the Saw series. We’ve known for a while that a third Insidious film would arrive in 2015, and that Whannell is writing that, too.
But with Wan moving on to direct Fast and Furious 7, where does that leave the third Insidious film? With Leigh Whannell directing, as it turns out. The writer/actor has just been announced as the director of Insidious: Chapter 3. Read More »

Briefly: Two franchises just dated their upcoming sequels. First up, The Farrelly Brothers‘ Dumb and Dumber To will be released November 14, 2014. It’s the sequel to the hit 1994 film starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. The Farrellys once again write and direct.
Second, Filmdistrict just dated Insidious: Chapter 3 for release April 3, 2015. Yes, another sequel in 2015. While James Wan, who directed the first two films, won’t return, writer Leigh Whannell is again penning this installment. Whannell (above left) wrote the first two films and co-starred in them as well. There’s no word on a director, but the second film pretty obviously set up a story line. [ERC]
File this under “obvious” but a third Insidious film is now officially in development. The second film, Insidious: Chapter 2, grossed eight times its budget over this past weekend and ends with a cliffhanger setting up a new direction for the franchise. A sequel was inevitable. Now Blumhouse, FilmDistrict and Sony are wasting no time in letting fans know the series will continue.
While director James Wan won’t return to direct (“I am finished with the horror genre,” he recently said), writer Leigh Whannell (left) will return to pen the third part. Whannell wrote the first two films in addition to co-starring. Read More »
