Cynthia Erivo recently brought Harriet Tubman to life in Kasi Lemmons‘ biopic Harriet. But back in the 1990s, things could’ve gone very, very differently. According to Harriet screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard, an attempt to get the movie made back in 1994 resulted in one studio executive suggesting Julia Roberts for the role of the African-American abolitionist.

Cynthia Erivo was a star the moment she opened her mouth and released a honeyed run of notes in Bad Times at the El Royale. Stealing 2018 in two back-to-back performances of El Royale and the critically acclaimed Widows, it was clear that the Tony-winning British actress was going to conquer the silver screen as well. And she’s got a role worthy of her star power in the rousing biopic Harriet, which follows the life of the slave-turned-abolitionist. Erivo is magnificent in the Kasi Lemmons-directed film, channeling a fiery rage and raw vulnerability in a performance that soars above the generic biopic formula that Harriet unfortunately cannot escape.

Awards and festival-season biopics generally follow a pretty strict pattern, and Kasi LemmonsHarriet doesn’t digress too far from that path. But the filmmaker (who debuted her feature film Eve’s Bayou at TIFF twenty-two years ago) went ahead and assured herself a success by casting Cynthia Erivo as abolitionist, Underground Railroad conductor, and Civil War hero Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross).

Cynthia Erivo sang her way onto our collective radar with an astonishing performance in last year’s Bad Times at El Royale (followed by a smaller but hardly less striking role in Steve McQueen’s Widows), and if she wasn’t already, she’s now guaranteed a forever place in our cultural consciousness with Harriet. This is an incredible turn, and while the film it’s in doesn’t quite match it, Erivo alone would be enough to make Harriet mandatory viewing.
