There are a lot of ways to interpret “I am Groot,” but there’s no question that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has the definitive translations for each of the sentient tree-being’s phrases.

As he’s been depicted thus far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Groot has been an emotionally pure, well-meaning, and protective talking alien tree. But after he sacrificed himself for the Guardians at the end of their first movie and spent all of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as Baby Groot, the character has grown into a moody teenager. Baby Groot may be the star of the show in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but he won’t be a baby forever. And wait ’til you see him at his peak, Vin Diesel — forever his own best hype man — says.
According to Diesel, you haven’t seen nothing yet of Groot. In fact, the giant, hulking Groot we met in the first Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t even the final form of Groot. But we may see a “full-fledged” Groot soon.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was one of the big winners out of Comic-Con 2016, with James Gunn’s upcoming sequel headlining Marvel Studios’ panel and going all-out with new footage and big revelations. At this point, it’s getting hard to believe that this group of characters were considered obscure just a few years ago. There are going to be kids growing up who hold the likes of Star-Lord and Drax in the same esteem as Spider-Man and Wolverine. That’s nuts.
You could feel the reverberations of Guardians of the Galaxy‘s success beyond Hall H, like at the Marvel Animation panel. Although the panel teased the new seasons of the company’s various shows and announced a new Hulk/Doctor Strange team-up movie, they also revealed a new series of animated shorts built around Rocket Raccoon and Groot. And you can watch the animation test that screened at the panel right now.

We’ve seen Bradley Cooper recording a few lines as Rocket Raccon in Guardians of the Galaxy, and heard his voice. Now here’s Vin Diesel‘s turn, as he discusses his character, the tree-man-alien Groot, who acts as “Rocket’s personal houseplant/muscle.” You won’t hear his voice, but there is some new footage to see below.
Update: Dave Bautista and Drax, Zoe Saldana and Gamora, and Chris Pratt and Star-Lord are the next actor/character pairs to get short video spotlights, and you can see their reels, each of which has some good new footage, below.
