The Gotham Awards were held last night, awarding some of the best films of the year, with Marriage Story coming out on top. The Noah Baumbach-directed Netflix film landed multiple awards, while some other notable films – like The Farewell – took home prizes as well. Awards season has officially begun with the announcement of the Gotham Awards 2019 nominees. The awards ceremony from the Independent Filmmaker Project has always marked the unofficial start of movie awards season, and from the looks of it, this will be A24 and Netflix’s year. The independent studio and the streaming giant dominated the indie honors, with A24’s The Farewell, Uncut Gems, and The Last Black Man in San Francisco leading the charge with three nods each, and Netflix’s Marriage Story scoring the same.

The 28th annual Gotham Awards took place last night, offering our first glimpse at a major awards show as we barrel toward the next Academy Awards ceremony. The Gotham Awards focus on independent movies, but plenty of previous winners have gone on to take home Oscar gold (Get Out and Call Me By Your Name were big winners last year).
This year, Chloe Zhao’s western drama The Rider took home the Best Feature prize in a highly competitive category, and Toni Collette and Ethan Hawke won in the lead acting categories for their stunning work in Hereditary and First Reformed, respectively.
