Ted, Uncharted, The Fighter 2, Bait and Switch, Broken City, Contraband, The Raven. The list of films Mark Wahlberg is currently making, potentially producing or has been attached too is more extensive than some actor’s whole careers. That’s especially the case when you add two more projects to the already lengthy list. Variety reports that Wahlberg is set to produce, and possibly star in, When Corruption Was King about a Chicago mob lawyer who turns on his employers while The Tracking Board says he’ll produce, and possibly star in, a remake of the 1971 film Billy Jack which was about an ex-Green Beret who tries to avoid violence but can’t as he defends an alternative school from the outside town. Chris Pine‘s pre-Star Trek film Carriers may have been dumped into a few theatres post-Star Trek, but hopefully his real post-Trek stuff will be more interesting and fare better with studio marketing departments. He’s already got Unstoppable in production, and now he’s part of a deal to fast-track a counterfeiting film called The Art of Making Money at Paramount. Read More »
Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to Robert Whiting’s Tokyo Underworld: The Fast Times and Hard Life of an American Gangster in Japan. Frank Baldwin, the screnwriter of Phillip Noyce’s upcoming film The Art of Making Money, will make his feature film debut. Published in September 2000, Tokyo Underworld is an “unorthodox chronicle of the rise of Japan, Inc.”:
“Through the eyes of Nick Zappetti, a former GI, former black marketer, failed professional wrestler, bungling diamond thief who turned himself into “the Mafia boss of Tokyo and the king of Rappongi,” we meet the players and the losers in the high-stakes game of postwar finance, politics, and criminal corruption in which he thrived. Mario Puzo, author of The Godfather, called the book “A fascinating look at some fascinating people who show how democracy advances hand in hand with crime in Japan.” I love American gangster films but it will be great to see a refreshing take on the genre. And I’ve always loved the setting of Tokyo. It isn’t used enough in American cinema.
