Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Just a couple weeks to go until Christopher Nolan’s Inception opens (the reviews are already up) but let’s take a moment to go back in time to 2002, when Nolan remade the Norwegian thriller Insomnia. The original was a great little piece of work, directed by Erik Skjoldbjærg. After Insomnia Skjoldbjærg hasn’t done a lot — his 2001 adaptation of Prozac Nation looks like it was a serious career stall.
