If you remember watching the early days of the American version of Whose Line is it Anyway? in the late ’90s and early 2000s, you probably recall a game in which performer Wayne Brady would essentially freestyle his way through a song based on a suggestion from the audience. But he wasn’t the only one doing hip-hop improv around that time.
There was also Freestyle Love Supreme, a small improv group comprised of future big names like Lin-Manuel Miranda. That group is the subject of a feature length documentary called We Are Freestyle Love Supreme which played at Sundance earlier this year, and it’s about to debut on Hulu in just a few days. The Office and Jack Ryan star John Krasinski recently started passing some of his time in self-quarantine by hosting a web series called Some Good News. Recorded from the home office of the A Quiet Place director/star, the series highlights some uplifting stories from around the web to help drown out the hellish nightmare of news from our government and the coronavirus pandemic that is claiming lives everyday.
The first episode of Some Good News brought the wonderful surprise of The Office star Steve Carell appearing on the show for a chat, just in time for the NBC workplace comedy’s 15th anniversary. But an even more impressive reunion comes in this week’s second episode as John Krasinski assembled the entire original cast of the Broadway music Hamilton and had them perform a musical number on the video conference service Zoom, all for a little girl who missed the show due to coronavirus cancellations. The best thing about Disney’s Moana is that it is unabashedly an old-school musical, with its unique setting and fantastical story adding a fresh flavor to an experience that is defined by incredible showstoppers. And like every musical ever conceived since the dawn of the form, not every track written for the film made it into the final cut. Thankfully, we live in an age of home video special features and even more thankfully, we live in an age where those special features arrive online in advance of the actual Blu-ray and DVD release, allowing us to hear a sample from one of those songs that didn’t make the final cut.
