In case you spent all day yesterday on the Moon, in a cave, with your fingers in your ears, Disney hosted a massive Investor Day presentation where they laid out plans for all sorts of future films and TV shows. It was kind of like Comic-Con, but all Disney, all the time, and with a lot more talk about stock options. We here at /Film covered the biggest of the big news yesterday, but there were still plenty of odds and ends left to round-up.

New Chip n Dale Series

Disney+ isn’t even close to done announcing new original programs. The Disney streaming service has just announced a new animated Chip n Dale series, done in a “non-verbal, classic style comedy.” On top of that, the streaming platform just released the logo for their upcoming Monsters, Inc. series, Monsters at Work. Rescue Rangers movie

Five years ago, we wrote about how Disney was developing a live-action/CG animation hybrid version of a Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers movie, based on the chipmunk pals who solve crimes with a few other pals like Gadget, Zipper, and Monterey Jack. Progress has been slow, but now the movie has a rather unexpected director.

Akiva Schaffer, the Lonely Island member and director of films like Hot Rod, The Watch, and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, has been hired to direct the movie, which is taking an unusual approach in its story. Read More »

Chip-Dale-Rescue-Rangers

Disney’s getting into shape to compete with film franchises featuring pint-sized protagonists like the Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks, with a live-action/CG hybrid film featuring the studio’s own animated chipmunks Chip ‘n Dale. Commercial director Robert Rugan pitched a story to Disney and the studio went for his “updated take” on the characters, per THR. The film will be based on the Chip ’n Dale Rescue Rangers show that saw the chipmunks acting as private detectives in the service of other animal clients.

In addition to a whole slate of commercial work, Rugan did the ‘Wiley vs Rhodes’ short, which may be the best indicator of his ability to do a hybrid comedy such as this. Check that out below. Read More »
