Last weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Charles Barkley was fairly lackluster. Though there were some decent laughs to be had here and there, the episode was mostly a disappointment. However, it could have been vastly improved if a certain pre-recorded sketch was included in the episode.
When Saturday Night Live does dress rehearsal, the episode has more sketches than will fit during the timeslot for the show. After dress rehearsal, it’s determined which sketches need to be cut, whether it’s because they didn’t land well at dress rehearsal or because they just don’t fit in the schedule properly. Whenever Saturday Night Live brings in an athlete to host the late night sketch comedy series, the quality of the show can be hit or miss. Some athletes just don’t have the charisma or the skill to do live comedy (or acting in general), but then there are those like Michael Jordan and Peyton Manning who really bring the laughs. Charles Barkley falls somewhere in the middle, and that’s exactly what we got this weekend.
Kicking off a new trio of episodes this month, Charles Barkley returned to Studio 8H for his fourth time at host. We got the highs and lows of having Barkley in the spotlight, because at times he can be downright hilarious, but other times he stunts the comedy show by stumbling over lines, which he’s reading in a clunky fashion. But even when the latter happened, there were still plenty of hilarious moments.

Saturday Night Live is in the middle of a break while NBC’s programming is dominated by Olympics coverage day in and day out. But they’ll be making a return in the first week of March with three shows in a row, featuring three interesting hosts, and three eclectic musical guests.
Kicking off this trio of episodes on March 3 will be former NBA player and Emmy-winning sports analyst and commentator Charles Barkley.
