2020 Oscars Video Highlights - Bong Joon-ho

The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.

In this edition, since the 92nd Academy Awards aired last night, we’re running through some 2020 Oscars video highlights. The show may not have had a host, but it had some major moments in between the little golden men being handed out. Janelle Monae opened the Oscars with a vibrant, dance-heavy musical number honoring nominess and movies snubbed by The Academy. Chris Rock and Steve Martin came as close to hosting the show as we were going to get, Idina Menzel belted a Frozen 2 tune with an assembly of international singers, and much more.

On top of the show highlights, we’ve also included some of the best acceptance speeches, included two extensive moments with Best Actor and Best Actress winners Joaquin Phoenix and Renee Zellweger, the surprise when Bong Joon-ho took home Best Director, and of course, the big moment when Parasite won Best Picture. 2020 Razzies Nominations

Since the Academy Awards are taking place this weekend, honoring the best achievements in film, it’s time for the Golden Raspberry Awards to announce who is in the running for worst movies and performances of the year.

The Razzies, as they’re known, aren’t as fun as they used to be, and they often take aim at some of the easiest targets. This year is no exception since Cats is one of three films that came out on top with the most nominations. Cats earned eight nominations, and A Madea Family Funeral and Rambo: Last Blood kept up with the musical felines, and they were all nominated for Worst Picture too. Get the full list of 2020 Razzies nominations below. Read More »

cats box office

The only thing Cats can’t drag in is more money. Tom Hooper‘s pricey big-screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is on track to lose up to $100 million at the box office, making the Universal film one of the biggest box office bombs of the year.

Cats is no longer Universal’s Jellicle choice for its Oscar contenders. The studio has removed Tom Hooper‘s feature film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical from its FYC page — the page listing Universal’s Oscar-qualifying movies. This effectively removes (or declaws) Cats chances for the major Academy Awards categories that the musical cat-tastrophe was aiming for, including visual effects and original song.

Cats wasn’t the Jellicle choice for audiences at the movies this weekend. The expensive Tom Hooper-directed CGI monstrosity bombed at the box office, while Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker soared to the top of the weekend box office charts, even though it didn’t come close to matching the opening weekend of its trilogy predecessors.

Universal Updating Cats Visual Effects

The big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Cats is already a disaster for a number of reasons. Chief among them are the unsettling cat-human hybrids at the center of the story, brought to life thanks to digital fur technology and motion-capture performances. Director Tom Hooper and the rest of his crew were working 36-hours straight up until 8am the morning before the world premiere, but it sounds like they didn’t quite finish everything they needed to. Cats cast sings Memory on The Tonight Show

While Emperor Palpatine returns to bring evil back to a galaxy far, far away, a different kind of nightmare is brewing in theaters this weekend alongside Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Cats arrives in theaters everywhere today, adapting the long-running hit Broadway musical of the same name. If the reviews are to be believed, this movie is nightmare fuel to the max. Thankfully, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon made the movie, or at least part of it, a little easier to swallow. The cast of the big screen musical stopped by the late night talk show for a little remix of the staple tune “Memory” in the shows recurring “Classroom Instruments” style. Listen as the Cats cast sings Memory on The Tonight Show. Read More »

cats review

There is a thin line between idiocy and genius, and Cats pukes a hairball on it and rubs its ass all over it. This is a movie where a cat version of Rebel Wilson wears a halter top underneath a fur skinsuit that she takes off with a zipper, before leading an army of cockroaches in a song and dance number alongside mice with human baby faces. And yet there are flashes of gonzo brilliance throughout the Tom Hooper-directed musical — although it’s unclear whether they’re intentional or accidental. Because this is Hooper (the prestige director with no vision) and Cats (the musical about nothing) that we’re talking about, is it possible for Cats to be anything more than a bizarre exercise in digital fur technology?

In the words of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, “Hal…this is just about cats.”

Millions will venture out this weekend to see how Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sends off the primary saga storyline in the sci-fi adventure franchise. Meanwhile, an entirely different group of people will see if they’re immune to nightmares by checking out Tom Hooper‘s big screen adaptation of the award-winning, long-running stage musical Cats.

Everything we’ve seen from the Cats movie so far has put us in stitches, but in no way has that diminished our anticipation for this celebration of digital fur. Adding to our excitement is a new video diary from Taylor Swift recording on the set of Cats, which takes us behind the scenes of the set, featuring settings and props three times larger than normal human size. Plus, there’s a real hairless cat on set, and a glimpse of how the chart-topping recording artist became a cat for the movie. Watch the Taylor Swift Cats video diary below! Read More »

Cool Posts From Around the Web:

Cats Visual Effects

When the first trailer for the big screen adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical Cats debuted over the summer, it became the talk of the web, but not for any good reason. Much of the internet was lambasting the movie for having some nightmare-inducing visual effects used to bring the digitally enhanced cat people to life. While it didn’t result in a complete overhaul of the character designs like Sonic the Hedgehog, director Tom Hooper reveals that it did help them figure out some changes that needed to be made to the Cats visual effects in as post-production continued.
