Awards season continues as we inch closer to the Academy Awards, and last night, an unlikely winner emerged to take home the top prize at the 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Marvel’s Black Panther walked away with the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, the SAG equivalent of Best Picture. The Queen biopic has become a bonafide worldwide sensation, shooting past $700 million at the global box office to become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time. Overnight, our friends across the pond announced the 2019 BAFTA nominations, the equivalent of the Academy Awards in the United Kingdom honoring the preceding year in film. It should come as no surprise that the British Academy of Film and Television Arts was more than ready to show plenty of love for The Favourite, a truly British film in every sense of the word. The film led the pack with 12 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and nods for Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz for their incredible performances.

Since 2010, the movie that won the Producers Guild of America award for best picture also went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars six out of eight times. (Only La La Land, The Big Short, and Gravity didn’t take home the top statue at both ceremonies; Gravity shared the PGA prize with eventual Oscar champ 12 Years a Slave in 2013.) Bohemian Rhapsody, the box office smash about Freddie Mercury and Queen, is coming home. The Bohemian Rhapsody Blu-ray will hit shelves in February, which the digital copy drops at the end of this month. The biopic received somewhat mixed reviews, with the only consensus being that Rami Malek turned in a great performance as Mercury. But audiences didn’t care about the lackluster critical reaction, and turned the movie into a monster hit.
