Dave Bautista is not content with playing just one beloved comic book character – the Guardians of the Galaxy star wants to add supervillain to his resume. Bautista revealed that he tried to land the part of Bane in Matt Reeves‘ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, but despite his best efforts, he could not. Which may be for the best since the film is already jam-packed with some of Batman’s most famous rogues, including Catwoman, the Penguin, the Riddler, and Carmine Falcone.

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic wears on, Hollywood and other industries are finding ways to cope with the rippling effects of shutdowns and quarantine. Some industries are seeing a surprising boom, like drive-in theaters or sellers of Bane masks from The Dark Knight Rises. Meanwhile, movie theaters in Japan are slowly re-opening by showing Hollywood classics like Ben-Hur, The Wizard of Oz, and Blade Runner.

The Lego Movie was a heartfelt love letter to the magic of play, a celebration of all the creativity and joy that these tiny plastic building blocks have brought to children and adults around the world for decades upon decades. But it was also an excuse to sell lots of Lego toys. Because who says you can’t be totally sincere and make lots of money at the same time?
In a similar vein, The Lego Batman Movie looks like an affectionate nod to the Caped Crusader and his storied history — his various personalities and personas, his weird quirks and inconsistencies, his colorful friends and foes — but also like a really good opportunity to promote some new Lego Batman toy sets. One of the big casting surprises of the year came early on, when it was announced that Tom Hardy would play Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. The character is known to hard-core fans as a smart, cunning adversary to Batman, but many see Bane only as a drug-fed musclebound gorilla in a Luchador mask. (Which is exactly what he was in a brief appearance in Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin.)
