After a promising start that included sweet, gentle About a Boy, Paul Weitz‘s career hasn’t been doing so well these past few years. His more recent work include American Dreamz, Cirque du Freak, and Little Fockers, none of which are exactly creative smashes. But if the moving trailer for his next project, Being Flynn, is any indication, Weitz could be on his way up again.
Based on Nick Flynn‘s acclaimed memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, Being Flynn centers around the relationship between a young writer (Paul Dano) and his absentee father (De Niro). The two cross paths one night at a homeless shelter, where the son works and the dad is seeking a room. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Paul Weitz is scripting and directing an adaptation of the Nick Flynn memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City and he has a hell of a cast assembled: Paul Dano plays Nick Flynn, who runs into his down and out father (Robert De Niro) while working at a Boston homeless shelter. Olivia Thirlby plays the romantic interest who gets Flynn the job at the shelter, and Julianne Moore is now onboard as well.
The info comes from a casting call looking for a stand-in for Julianne Moore, so we don’t have any official info on her role at this point, but something is likely to be out soon as the film starts shooting next week in New York City. (Edit: Deadline confirms the casting, but only says she has a ‘small role.’) The film is currently working under the shortened title Another Night in Suck City, but even that seems likely to change. For some time now, Paul Weitz has been attached to direct Another Night in Suck City, based on Nick Flynn‘s 2004 memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. The last time we heard about the film was a year ago, when a report about Robert De Niro casually mentioned that he was attached to a role in the film. It’s been quiet on the Suck City front since then, but now Paul Dano is reportedly attached, too, for the role once meant for Casey Affleck. Read More »
Who knew that reporting on an actor’s change of agency could be reason to throw out bare tidbits of info about three upcoming films? In a report about Robert De Niro moving to CAA, Nikki Finke drops three little bombs about future projects for the actor. The biggest one is that he will feature in Selma, the upcoming film from Precious director Lee Daniels about Lyndon Johnson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the voting rights and desegregation campaigns and civil rights marches that centered in Selma, Alabama in the mid-’60s. De Niro would play Alabama governor George Wallace, who was in his first term as governor at the time, and famously pro-segregation.
After the break, two more projects in the pipeline for De Niro. Read More »
