You Can (Kinda) Thank Heath Ledger For Tobey Maguire's Infamous Spider-Man 3 Dance Moves
By SCOTT THOMAS
Tobey Maguire and Health Ledger don’t seem to have a lot in common, but as it happens, Heath Ledger played a part in Tobey Maguire’s infamous “Spider-Man 3” dance sequence. Both dances were choreographed by Marguerite Pomerhn Derricks, and although Maguire was initially hesitant to dance, Derricks’ previous work with Ledger convinced him.
Derricks previously worked with Ledger on “10 Things I Hate About You,” when she choreographed his famous song-and-dance routine atop the concrete bleachers. Derricks was inspired by the moves of Fred Astaire, and knew that it would require a “fearless” actor to pull off the moves without looking too “old-school.”
When Maguire was hesitant to dance, it was ultimately footage of Ledger dancing that convinced him. Derricks said that Maguire was initially “negative, negative, negative” about the routine, and when he changed his mind, “it was because of Heath.” Maguire failed to make the moves look as cool as Ledger, but if you watch closely you can see the similarities.
