Yoda Was Only In Return Of The Jedi Because Of This Child Psychology Advice

After the big reveal in “The Empire Strikes Back,” Yoda confirms Darth Vader is Luke’s father in “Return of the Jedi.” However, Yoda wasn’t originally planned to be in the sequel.
George Lucas consulted with child psychologists, who were concerned younger children might not have believed Darth Vader’s reveal without a trusted figure to confirm the truth.
Dr. Janina Scarlet, clinical psychologist and author of “Unseen, Unheard, Undervalued,” explained why having this scene was necessary for the film and its younger audience.
Scarlet said, “‘Star Wars’ explores really complicated topics, including loss, abandonment, betrayal, and trauma,” adding that these subjects can be difficult for any viewer.
She added, “When trying to make sense of such complicated experiences [...] it can be helpful to have some clarity through the eyes of a wise and compassionate mentor, like Yoda.”
Including the Jedi master in the film and having him confirm Darth Vader is Luke’s father shows George Lucas was conscious of who “Return of the Jedi” was for.
