Yellowstone Season 2 Made Kevin Costner ‘Very Upset’
By RYAN COLEMAN
“Yellowstone” star Kevin Costner apparently wasn't thrilled when he realized just what lengths his character, John Dutton, would go to in the series to preserve Yellowstone Ranch.
Season 2 of “Yellowstone” charts an intense ongoing feud between the Dutton clan and a rival family called the Becks who have a competing interest in the region.
The events take a dark turn, and even the gallant Dutton patriarch has a hand in the dealings. Series creator Taylor Sheridan recalled his clash with Costner over the story.
Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter, “There was a time in Season 2 when [Costner] was very upset and said the character wasn't going in the direction he wanted.”
Sheridan reminded the actor that “this is essentially 'The Godfather' on the largest ranch in Montana? Are you that surprised that the Godfather is killing people?”
From Sheridan’s perspective, Costner had “clung to [Dutton's] commitments to his family and way of life,” but was somewhat blinded to “Dutton's big failing.”
Dutton wasn’t, in Sheridan’s words, “evolving with the times — not finding different revenue streams [for the ranch].”
However, Sheridan eventually admitted, “I don't know that [Costner] was wrong. In Season 3, we steered back into it.”
