“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is the second entry in the mystic superhero franchise and sees the titular hero fight alongside his new friend, America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), against the Scarlet Witch. Reports shared that the movie underwent significant reshoots, and Gomez shared one significant change to the film’s beginning.
In the opening scene, America and an alternate version of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), known as Defender Strange, flee from a monster before Strange tries to absorb America’s multiverse-hopping powers to defeat it. Gomez revealed that the original beginning had Defender Strange trying to save her character from the monster instead of betraying her.
The experience, Gomez explained, “was a turning point, that when he died it was me being heartbroken over the fact that someone who cared and was protecting me had passed away.” The reshot version added tension between the characters with the possibility of Earth’s Doctor Strange also betraying her — but Strange learns to trust others and overcome his impulse to control situations.
