Willem Dafoe Returned For Spider-Man: No Way Home Under One Condition
By MICHAEL BOYLE
While “Spider-Man: No Way Home” featured many of the superhero’s villains from previous films, it’s safe to say that Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin had the strongest presence.
Dafoe’s character brought a dark, unpredictable energy that Tom Holland’s previous “Spider-Man” movies never had. Part of what made him great was Dafoe taking part in the action.
In an interview, Dafoe recalled saying, “Listen, I don’t want to just pop in there as a cameo or just fill in close-ups. I want to do the action because that’s fun for me.”
He added, “It’s really impossible to add any integrity or any fun to the character if you don’t participate in these things.” To Dafoe, the action reveals a character’s place in the story.
Dafoe’s willingness to film on practical sets paid off, but he’s also made it clear over the years that doing so is a lot of fun for him, as he explained in a GQ interview.
He shared, “It’s really fun to do those things because they’re pure. They’re pure because what you’re doing is what you’re doing. And your heart and mind follow.”
