Baby Yoda elicits strong reactions from many, including Werner Herzog, who played The Client in “The Mandalorian.” He said it would be cowardly to depict the character in CGI.
At first, the showrunners hadn’t decided whether Grogu would be a puppet or CGI, so they shot each scene he appeared in twice, one with the puppet and one without.
Creator Dave Filoni says that when Herzog saw him and Jon Favreau removing the puppet, he remarked, “What are you doing? You are cowards. Leave it. Leave it.”
Filoni and Favreau found Herzog’s dedication to the puppet admirable, with Filoni stating, “He was so committed,” and Favreau adding, “It was so awesome.”
While it’s understandable why the creators were considering CGI, Herzog’s opinion proved correct, as the Grogu puppet became beloved by fans everywhere.
