Why Was Night Sky Canceled After Just One Season?
By BJ COLANGELO
After just eight episodes on Amazon Prime Video, the science fiction series “Night Sky” has been canceled. Despite positive reviews from critics and viewers, a report from Deadline states that the series did not have “significant viewership impact.”
While the streaming numbers may have been too low to justify the costs of an expensive sci-fi series and were probably affected by the premiere of "Obi-Wan Kenobi” a week later, the problem may ultimately lie in Prime Video’s marketing. “Night Sky” was actually the first series to be streamed in outer space as part of its promotional campaign, but nobody knew about it.
It’s unfortunate the series was canceled prematurely when it had the talents of two Oscar-winning actors, J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek. They played an older couple, Franklin and Irene, who kept their backyard portal to another planet hidden so that it would remain deserted, only to discover that it wasn’t quite a secret after all.
