Why The Original Toonami TOM Was Killed Off By Cartoon Network

While Moltar, a supervillain from 1966’s “Space Ghost,” was the original host of Cartoon Network’s Toonami, TOM replaced him three years later.
TOM wasn’t just a host; he also came with his own lore and storyline from episode to episode. Unfortunately, the beloved host was killed during The Intruder storyline.
After being approached by the sales department about creating a story for the host, Toonami creators Sean Akins and Jason DeMarco were onboard and wanted to resign TOM.
Akins told Complex, “We really were like, ‘This guy’s not cool looking, we need a new looking guy. What happened to this guy? He gets eaten by something?’”
The Intruder storyline and TOM’s death would give Akins and DeMarco a chance to revamp the character, paving the way for future incarnations of the host.
